Chapter 3. Sam's
run.
“ If you promise
not to run, I'll let you speak freely now” he said.
Immediately, I agreed and just as I was about to run, I stopped. What
if he really could help me? What if I was in dire need of his
assistance, but how could I tell? How could I trust him? Somehow, I
felt I could, so I did, and so I stayed. Sam and me sat down on the
earth and he told me how he had come. “My mother was part of
the underground railroad” he said, he gave me a thoughtful
glance and continued. “She always invited poor black people in
and gave them hope”, “I also realized racism was wrong
and I was very kind to black people my age”. “My friends
thought I was strange and they turned on me”. I patted the
grass and said “your mother sounds very kind... maybe someday I
could meet her!” I sounded enthusiastic but Sam flinched and
his face fell. Realizing what I had said was wrong, I tried to work
my way out of it but it was no use. I thought that all I could do was
apologize and so I did “Sam, I'm sorry... ” I said
sympathetically. He smiled “but that's all in the past now”,
“I have a job as a doctor but I've never had the chance to take
care of a black person, either they are beaten by their owners and
never found or just left on the ground when they die or are injured.”
he frowned, “you see I've had a past in the orphanage and you
have no idea how bad the black orphans have got it there”, “and
sure they weren't too kind to the white orphans but the others had it
much worse, and after what my mother had told me, I couldn't bear it
much longer”. “So you ran away?” I questioned, he
nodded. We sat there in silence for a while until Sam suddenly got
up, “Run!” he yelled, his brown eyes darting fast. I got
up and stood, not knowing what to do. Sam had a terrified and crazed
look on his face, he grabbed my arm and, within seconds we were
running as fast as the wind. I knew if I looked behind me I wouldn't
like what I would see but it was just so tempting that I couldn't
help it and I slowly turned my head. I gasped, there in this forest,
chasing us, were the two worst people I could imagine seeing right
now. And what I thought you would guess is that it would be Mrs.
Lilli and Madame but you have got that only half right, you see Mrs.
Lilli has been in the hospital for only one day and it would be
entirely impossible for her to be up and running after us in a forest
with a broken leg, so yes she is not here. However, Madame isn't hurt
at all, in fact she was, the person on the left chasing after us. But
who, you ask is the second person? Well I'll tell you, it was a plump
man in a sheriff suit with a crooked mustache and that man was in
fact, the sheriff. So now that you know who it is I'm sure you are
wondering how they had gotten here, well firstly, madame was
immediately notified of Mrs. Lilli's accident and decided to look to
the scene of the crime. And the sheriff of course was notified soon
after that and drove to the same little camp that Madame had came to.
After a while, Sam looked behind him and he too had gasped, but no
not in fear of Madame who he had not yet met yet, but in fear and
shock of his own friend, Mikalo. He had betrayed Sam and all he
wanted was money for bringing him in. At that moment Sam squeezed my
hand and whispered
in my ear: “you
must leave here and run away, this is your journey and I wish you
luck, thank you... for letting me help you.”
And
with that he left me as I waved goodbye, with a heavy heart.
Careful
of my steps I trudged through the woods. “Oh no,”
I thought. There were voices quickly approaching but by the gruff
and loud sound of them, it wasn't Madame, the sheriff, or Sam. I
scampered to a nearby tree while the grass grazed my legs. “So
this is where the little one is?” said one. “Yep, just a
bit farther and we'll be able to get our work done here”. I
heard the “clip clop” of their horses as they went into
the direction of when I ran from Sam and the others. “So that
girl we were told about, er' name's Sarah ain't it?”. “Sure
is, and even she's just a young in' I bet she'd be strong enough to
hear some directions”. Holding my breath to prevent
gasping, a tear trickled down my face and slowly they multiplied
over, and over. “No” I thought, and shook my head “Sarah,
my baby sister is not gonna be taken by these
strangers!” And that's when I decided to follow them.
