  Chapter 5. The house

   I
don't know how long we ran, all I know was that I passed everything I
saw when I was following the two men. I passed my hiding bush,
hooveprints, the clearing, footprints..... You get the picture. I sat
on a log with Sarah next to me. I remembered the short, but happy
time I spent with Sam and get this; I cried! I felt like a baby as
Sarah was comforting me when I should be comforting her “ Don't
cry Cathy it's ok”  she said. I stood up,dried my tears, and
sighed. Footsteps, guns, here we go again! I started up a tree and
Sarah followed. Once we reached the top we started jumping.. you
heard me right, jumping, from tree-top to tree-top. I heard somewhat
of a giggle escape from Sarah's mouth “Cathy this is great!”
“I feel like Tarzan!” Yeah that's Sarah for you, talk
about totally ignorant that giant dudes with guns are chasing you.

         “What's that Cathy?” Sarah said
curiously when the bad guys were finally out of range. I turned in
the direction Sarah was pointing to, “SWEET HONEY BUNS!”
I exclaimed, “I must be dreaming!” Sarah was pointing to
a rustic style, beautiful, brick house,  “Sarah are you seeing
what I'm seeing? Oh my gosh I smell food!” we ran and ran until
the house was within walking distance. I hoped so much that it was a
safe house,  if it wasn't then we'd have nowhere else to go! I
carefully checked for safe house signals that me and Sarah learned
from mama and we exchanged a joyful glance that said “its
safe”.

As Sarah and I walked up the steps I felt a
tingling sensation on my arms, something didn't feel right. By
instinct, I turned around and looked carefully in every direction,
Nothing. Sarah and me simultaneously put our hands to the door and
knocked.

                              We were unexpectedly
greeted by a ugly and torn up looking man, his beady eyes darted back
and forth rapidly, his jeans were destroyed and that was an
understatement, his plain, white T-shirt was torn on the side and
stained with all sorts of unwelcoming things and his face was
terribly dirty and scratched by what looked like a cat. He said
nothing so I was feeling unsure but Sarah smiled up at him and
immediately started to speak to him and before I could stop her she
started babbling on, “Hi mister my names Sa...mantha, yeah my
names Samantha but you can just call me Sam , you wouldn't happen to
have any bread or cheese to spare would you, we are terribly hungry
and it would be much obliged if you could share it with us, this is
Clarice my older sister and she will be very thankful to you right
sis? And I would be too, so if you could just spare some food and
water it would be appreciated!”

Man that girl could talk. “Yes sir” I
said and nodded solemnly, “Greatly appreciated.”  The man
just stood there, smiling. It was pretty creepy actually, but all
that seemed important was getting food so we just waited without
making any comments. Finally he made a small hand gesture that
welcomed us inside. As we were led toward the kitchen, the delightful
food smell became stronger and embarrassingly, my stomach growled.
For the first time, the man actually talked; “Bet you're hungry
huh? Well I could use something too, so y'all just wait here while I
grab whatever's in the ol' pantry.” It was terrifying, staring
at his yellow teeth and cat- scratched face while he spoke in a
wheezy-crackly sort of voice. As we watched him poke in and out of
his dusty old pantry, I wondered if me and Sarah would ever settle
down in some place, together, it would be so perfect, not having to
move from place to place endangered,it would probably never happen,
but it was nice to imagine once in a while. He handed each of us a
dirty-ish plate and placed two pieces of bread each with a slab of
butter, on them. “Golly! Thank you soooooo much sir!” , “
we would've been in a sticky situation if it weren't for you!”
Sarah said between mouthfuls. He simply smiled and nodded, he seemed
he wanted to say something but quickly lost interest. Sarah really
liked to chat so she immediately started the conversation again,
“Mister do you live alone here, all alone?” The man
looked a bit sad but put his finger in his mouth and whistled,
suddenly a brown sheepdog came running up to us, “ohmygosh
ohmygosh ohmygosh!” Sarah exclaimed and the man laughed. “Er'
name's angel, you can pet her, she's friendly” he said in his
already signature voice. Sarah was so happy and I was too, “You
know Sarah, If we ever get the chance we will get a dog alright? I
promise” Sarah looked overjoyed and sighed, “Your dog is
so beautiful sir! I wish I had one like her!”

   He
smiled back at her gently and said, “Thank ya, she is quite a
beaut', So I do reckon yur quite aways from home aren't ya?” he
asked, pausing to scratch under Angel's chin. I sat there not really
knowing what to say, wide eyed and tired, but then I thought Sarah
must feel that way too, and she sure wasn't showing it so I felt a
bit guilty. “Err... um.. yeah kind of” I said awkwardly.
He didn't respond for a long time so I guessed he figured that I had
more to say, so I continued “Would you happen to know the
closest town from here, thats, you know, safe?” I questioned.
“H mm.. Yes,actually, if you go north right there,” he
paused to point out the window with a pencil, “You will find a
nice little town but beware and trust only yourself, for there isn't
many you can trust”
We sat there in awkward silence for a while until the man suggested,
“I am truly sorry I have no tea, you look awfully thirsty, but
if we go out back we can get some water from my well”  “That
would be absolutely, gosh-darned, delightful! You are so very kind
sir!” Sarah said as I nodded solemnly in agreement.

As
we followed the man out his back door that funny tingling sensation
across my arm returned, just for a second I thought about what he
said; “Trust no one but yourself”
well, and
Sarah, I added to my thought, then followed as we stepped out on to
the rugged, sandy, earth.
