Description EDIT:
1. I know I twisted her pose too much, and her right leg looks like it's broken. :"D But this is not a pose tutorial, so focus on the coloring and other things, ok? ^^/

2. I made a little mistake while typing: On the last picture before Step3, I said 'put them all in one layer'. It should be 'put them all in one folder' there.

And thank you all for the support. ^^/

--------
Warning: Super duper giant file. OTL

As I was asked by some people to make some kind of tutorials. So this is one way of coloring I can show you.

I don't want to make too many deviations at a time so, please be patient with this long ass 'Step by step'.OTL

And here is the bigger finished version of the picture:

I hope it helps somehow. ;n;a

I will try working on some other styles' step by step, if there are requests in the future. /o/

Hello there! Thanks for the tut
But i have a question >_<

I draw my outlines with an linework layer, didn't had a sketch for my pic.
After that, i saved the picture as png and did the things u told in the tut.
I selectet the parts i don't want to color.
Did a new layer and invert selection (layer under lineart)
Now when i create a new layer above my linearts and try to collor, i draw over my linearts.
Did i do something wrong?
Sorry for my bad english, i hope u can understand my problem and maybe u can help me >__<

Oh I think all the color layers should be under the lineart layer. You can see from the tutorial that the Lines layer is always on the top.

Also, the Png file you saved should only have the lines visible with transparent background (NOT lines with white background).Β

What's your average canvas size for drawing? c:Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ZenithOmocha In reply to talaren-chan [2014-01-11 08:34:20 +0000 UTC]

I use different sizes for different purposes. The brush size is then manually adjusted to fit the canvas size.

talaren-chan In reply to ZenithOmocha [2014-01-12 01:50:34 +0000 UTC]

What I mean is, for drawing a single character for example, would you use a canvas that was approximately 1200x2000 pixels? I know some artists on dA will use a canvas that's 3000x4200 pixels which is huuuuge but will shrink it down once their complete so lines that looked shaky up close at actual size look clean when shrunken down. A lot of them suggest bigger the better so it looks good smaller, and I was wondering if you did anything similar?Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ZenithOmocha In reply to talaren-chan [2014-01-12 05:36:37 +0000 UTC]

As I said, the canvas sizes for me is based on purposes.

Normally I start with a size around 600-100 pixel wide if it's just a random drawing/non-commercial commission. But I change the canvas as I draw as well, sometimes it ends up being smaller, sometimes bigger.

I only use bigger specific canvas for specific purposes, like for a print or wallpaper. In those cases the canvas is decided at the begining.Β

And giant canvas actually don't affect my lines much, it just take more time to zoom in and refine the lines to make sure they are not shaky.Β

I am quite a perfectionist and into details so I tend to try making things that looks good at any size, so I rarely use the trick of 'making it big so that it looks better when being small'.Β What's the point of making a big canvas just to crop it small later?Β I don't really see the point of doing that while we have the zoom in and zoom out functions.

Also, bigger canvas = bigger file which requires more momory, so I don't encourage using it in case you have not-a-so-strong computer/laptop, or don't really have a purpose for using big files (that I gave some examples above).

Actually I would suggest that you go ahead and try things out by yourself. Aboves are only my opinion for my own style/drawings, which may or may not apply to you. Each person has a different method, and before knowing which method would suit you, you need to try many out 1st.Β

I hope this helps. C:

How do you find the Saturation/Linear clip in SAI? Sorry if the question is retarded, but I am quite new to the program.

You should be able to find them among the options above the layers- Blend mode and Layer clip.

I was wondering how big the canvas was for this, and what resolution you use?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ZenithOmocha In reply to MirrorKey [2013-09-02 20:08:02 +0000 UTC]

^_^; It was very long ago, so I don't remember exactly.

But the resolution I normally use is 300dpi.

Then the canvas depends on how big I want the drawing to be, I adjust the brush size accordingly.

Hope this helps. C:

This is a very good tutorial; one of the best ones I've seen so far Really helpful and easy to follow.
But I have only a question (that might be pretty dumb lol): When you start shading, do you use a different color according to the base color, or do you just choose a certain tone and shade everything with it?
Thanks a lot for the tutorial

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ZenithOmocha In reply to Izaoli [2013-08-30 19:43:27 +0000 UTC]

Just a certain tone like stated in the tutorial, since I will recolor it later anyway. c:

This is a beautiful tutorial! So detailed and clean. That trick in the beginning, with the grey base and clipping the colors for the skin and such is a big help! And I really like how you shaded her eyes. Though sadly when I get to part Four, the Photoshop part, I run into trouble; not because you didn't make everything clear, it's crystal clear! But, I don't have any version of Photoshop, and I don't know where to get one. Do you know where I can find a version?

Again, this tutorial is beautiful and very helpful. Even though I don't have Photoshop the parts I can do make things easier to color. Thank you for making this!
