Description EDIT:
1. I know I twisted her pose too much, and her right leg looks like it's broken. :"D But this is not a pose tutorial, so focus on the coloring and other things, ok? ^^/

2. I made a little mistake while typing: On the last picture before Step3, I said 'put them all in one layer'. It should be 'put them all in one folder' there.

And thank you all for the support. ^^/

--------
Warning: Super duper giant file. OTL

As I was asked by some people to make some kind of tutorials. So this is one way of coloring I can show you.

I don't want to make too many deviations at a time so, please be patient with this long ass 'Step by step'.OTL

And here is the bigger finished version of the picture:

I hope it helps somehow. ;n;a

I will try working on some other styles' step by step, if there are requests in the future. /o/

...........can this whole thing be done on Adobe???

ZenithOmocha In reply to wierdandfreakyart [2012-03-17 13:39:53 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it can be done in Photoshop only. C:
The Saturation/Linear layer in SAI can be replaced by some other layer modes in PS. But in my opinion it's less effective to bring out the highlights. That's why I prefer SAI to do it. Let alone that I prefer SAI's brush/pen tools.

;;u;; yay..... i dont have SAI....so i half to wait for my next birthday, or if someone gives it to me as a gift (~O3O)~...and my tablet is an ADESSO so i dont have any "special features" besides the fact that i can use it to draw (sry 4 the looooooooong message )

XD It's ok, your message is not that long.
And yes I suggest that you get SAI. It's easy and fun to use. o u o/
Anyway, Photoshop is actually better if you can get a hold of it. Just try every feature out! o/

good ........ikr.............................uuuuuuuuum.....just a weird question, buuuut, will it also work on Adobe Photoshop version 7.0.1(2)???(~O3O)~ cuz thats the one i have

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ZenithOmocha In reply to wierdandfreakyart [2012-03-17 14:19:37 +0000 UTC]

oh wow that's an old version. ouo;a
I have never used it so I cannot tell for sure it has all the features needed for all the steps.
On the other hand, I think I only use very basic features, so I guess it's ok, you just need to look for the features needed.

The only thing is that I don't think you can create a clipping mask (same as layer clip) to a group (same as folder) in PS. So you may need to merge all the base color layers into one before shading. ouo;a

XD!!!uuuum..its pretty much the same as the 1 ur using...except it doesnt have layer clip

yay...

ZenithOmocha In reply to wierdandfreakyart [2012-03-17 17:42:27 +0000 UTC]

XD; I think maybe it has, somewhere. ;u;a Photoshop changes working space in each version. You can try looking around the Layers window, or try right-clicking a layer to see if there's any option alike 'create clipping mask'.
If there's nothing like that, I'm sorry I'm at no help. ;u;a

What size is the pen tool when you use it for lineart?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ZenithOmocha In reply to konoe-hecate [2012-03-17 13:30:53 +0000 UTC]

It is normally around 3px. I adjust it very often actually, from 1px to even 10. I use a tablet so it depends much on my hand's pressure as well. However, I think my lines are kinda thick.

Hmmm, the rest looks pretty cool, but the way you used shadows and highlight on her eyes make them look uncannily like they're half covered in see-through plastic...

Omocha, I am sorry if I didn't look though your (WONDERFUL) tutorial properly, but I just wanna ask how did you create the textures on her clothes??
Thanks for this super cool wonderful awesome useful tutorial!!

ZenithOmocha In reply to BakaBelle [2012-03-17 07:11:23 +0000 UTC]

It's ok. XD I should have talked about it a little too. o u o/

About the textures on her clothes, if you notice, on the step that I added more details on parts of her outfit, right before Step 4: On the top left corner of the screencap, there's a little box called Texture.

That box sets the texture of the layer. And I just chose my Jeans texture and adjusted the texture's settings as I liked.

However, you'll need to have that SAI texture installed. ouo;a I think you can find some SAI textures, and tutorials on how to install them on DA or through google.

For this picture I just added textures like that. There's another way I normally use: Drag a texture layer over they layer you want to texturize, and set the texture layer to Overlay/softlight. However, you will need to delete the texture layer a little so that it won't affect other parts you don't want to texturize.

I hope it helps.o u o/

And thank you so much! XD <3333

I never thought about filling in the entire character with a solid base colour and then using the layer clip! It seems so obvious, now. It'll save me a lot of time since I won't have to stop and clean up whenever I colour over the background by mistake. Thank you very much for this!

Wow... my lines are very hard to close, and even when I do close them, the Magic Wand always leaves a tiny white border between my selection and my lines, it's so unreliable.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ZenithOmocha In reply to Cardinal4 [2012-03-17 14:26:36 +0000 UTC]

Do you know you can adjust the setting of the Magic wand with the Transp box? The higher the setting number is, the more it selects into different colors' area.
And if there are still white dots (normally at edges/corners), that's when you use the Select tool.
Anyway, patience 1st.

I hope this helps somehow. C:

Cardinal4 In reply to ZenithOmocha [2012-03-17 16:21:01 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for trying. It does help somewhat, but first I have to really thicken my lines haha..

ZenithOmocha In reply to Cardinal4 [2012-03-17 17:46:02 +0000 UTC]

Or just thicken the bordering lines is enough.
