Description
EDIT:1. I know I twisted her pose too much, and her right leg looks like it's broken. :"D But this is not a pose tutorial, so focus on the coloring and other things, ok? ^^/
2. I made a little mistake while typing: On the last picture before Step3, I said 'put them all in one layer'. It should be 'put them all in one folder' there.
And thank you all for the support. ^^/

Warning: Super duper giant file. OTL
As I was asked by some people to make some kind of tutorials. So this is one way of coloring I can show you.
I don't want to make too many deviations at a time so, please be patient with this long ass 'Step by step'.OTL
And here is the bigger finished version of the picture:
I hope it helps somehow. ;n;a
I will try working on some other styles' step by step, if there are requests in the future. /o/

I have a question to ask for picture panel 4.
since the layer in order is
-lineart
-overlay/background
-sketch

this is really helpful! Thank you! *u* One question though, is there a reason why we need a random colour as the main base before colouring it? Why shouldn't we colour directly on the lineart? I'm really new at this so I hope that it's not a stupid question lol but good work with the tutorial! 8'D

Hi! ^^/ To answer your questions:
1. The random main base color is to define the coloring zone that all other colors will be in. If you don't have that base you won't be able to use Layer clip feature.
2. Coloring on the lineart will mess with the lineart's color. It's just harder to control and fix that way.
The best way for you to understand why and why not, is to try out this tutorial directly. You'll see the differences more easily that way. C:
Good luck! ^^/

Very great tutorial on technique and how to achieve the effects!
I was wondering if you had (or knew of) a tutorial on the actual shading (in terms of shape of light and shadows, lighting direction, etc.) I've always noticed that manga style cel-shading looks a little different from normal shading and I can't quite figure it out when I try to achieve it.

* 7 * ooooh so this is how omo works. /should do lazy shading because of big file sizes
though i would use a layer mask on the group layer ahaha /flees

ZenithOmocha In reply to saraCHU [2012-03-26 22:36:13 +0000 UTC]
Lol I am too lazy for layer mask.
But yeah I think lazy shading is just best for cell shading lol.
I haven't tried it with other shading styles. And I don't think it works for other styles either lol.

Oh just a question. In the last picture of your tutorial and in the final, your character has like lines on her jacket and shorts . If you don't mind me asking, how exactly did you get that effect.
And another question: Do you outline your shading so it looks like it stands out because it's really cool looking and I've been trying to figure out how to do that for a while, actually.
Thanks for a great tutorial anyway <3

ZenithOmocha In reply to YumiTohomiko [2012-03-17 16:04:51 +0000 UTC]
1. I added the texture for the coat's and shorts' layers (Using the Texture box as shown in the screencap right before step4). You need to have that SAI texture installed to use that method btw. You can look up for SAI textures and tutorials about how to install them on the internet.
2. Yes, I kinda outlined it, with Wet edge option, and the 2nd darker shading color. (2nd and 3rd screencaps of step 4). After locking the shading layer, I just simply added the darker shade color where I want near the outline areas, without worrying it will go outside. C:
I hope it helps. o/<3
