This tutorial really helped me out in figuring the tricks to getting SAI to work easier and in creating wonderful skin tone, but I've run up against a problem. When I hold CTRL and left click on a layer, it doesn't outline it. Am I doing something wrong?

To change the skin color in sense of lights to darks, use the multiply and luminosity features, yes?

okay couple questions!
whats a tablet and if you have the Line Art layer b4 colouring, would you just MOVE it when your done or copy it?
all in all very nice!

To get a better understanding of what a tablet is, google "wacom intuos3". It's basically a drawing device attached to the computer, and you draw directly to the computer. No paper sketching beforehand required.

Yeah... the lineart first, then I start colouring. I usually keep the lineart there unless I want a different style of colouring.

I keep the lineart there in most of mine, I don't move it or copy it :S

wait there's something i need to know when you said shade for the base did you change you're 2nd layer to lumi/overlay? or did you keep it as normal and went over it? then for darker was it shade/overlay? just wondering that :3

zephi-san In reply to steohen2 [2009-07-24 16:04:56 +0000 UTC]

No layer properties. Just keep it on normal and select the colour you desire, rather than mixing colours. I think it lets you learn which colour to pick rather than experimenting until you get a nice colour.
But for highlights, I sometimes use layer properties.

dream-phoenix [2009-07-21 15:09:17 +0000 UTC]

Just one question for now: are you using a tablet or a mouse?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zephi-san In reply to dream-phoenix [2009-07-21 15:54:53 +0000 UTC]

I'm using a tablet of course, but this can still be achieved using a mouse. I have been using a mouse to colour up until the end of March. Using a tablet just makes things easier and a bit faster.

dream-phoenix In reply to zephi-san [2009-07-21 16:58:09 +0000 UTC]

I see...
Nah, I just can't understand how to work with mouse in SAI ^^'
Using it for linearts though. But Photoshop with smudge tool is still irreplaceble for me

zephi-san In reply to dream-phoenix [2009-07-22 02:41:08 +0000 UTC]

It's a disappointment that SAI doesn't have the smudge tool. But I still find ways around it.
