I have a question if you don't mind my asking- what type of chalk do you use and how do you get such good contrast over the pencils with it?
I've tried using white pastels to get a similar effect, but it ends up making a dull gray mess when I use it over a penciled area..

The chalk I used is normal white pastel, and any pastels can't work good enough with pencil, because pencil is too smooth. pastels and chalk can only mix with charcoal or something.
If I decide to draw with pencil(as I usually do), I always draw around the white part so it can be white enough, and draw light color depends on the situations.
