Description
Overture:As I lie awake, alone, late at night in bed
The happiness I feel in me turns to fright instead
And all my life, it seems, I’ve been inhibited by my fears
Now while the sun gently sets, I look back through the years…
Part One: The Exploration
Beneath the blinding midday sun, he opened his dull eyes
And now his story had begun, a tale of pain and lies
But it was more beneath the moon where this sad tale should start
For darkness and insanity already ruled his heart
For shame, a mind so pure and young, corrupted early on
His conscience felt so present there, but part of it was gone
Neglected by his family, he needed to explore
Rejected by his friends, but still, he knew there must be more
He broke away from all he had and for a while, felt free
But it became too much and he succumbed to misery
He shuddered at the awful thought, returning home again
So onwards he trekked through the dark, through wind and mist and rain
Finding a place to rest one night, when stars hung in the skies
Proved more complex than he had thought, and rubbing his tired eyes
He lay down on a rocky knoll, curling up in a ball
When on a strange, mysterious cave, his weary eyes did fall
Part Two: The Dream
On entering the tiny cave, just big enough for one
He thought himself the luckiest man to walk beneath the sun
But as he lay down in the warmth, dreams took over his mind
And all the darkness he’d suppressed, was no longer confined
It all poured out across the vast plateau of his nightmare
It found the places it could plague, and terminated there
Festering on throughout the night, and torturing his dreams
The darkness and insanity, accompanied by screams
A twisted figure drew near to him, arriving with a bow
He felt he knew who this creature was, but he could not think how
It told him, “Stay on your true path, and don’t wander away
At night time evil can run free, but hide it in the day”
The warped form he had seen then left as quickly as it arrived
Compared to all the happy souls, he felt strongly deprived
What would he give for someone now, to have one single friend?
Now as he turned back to the light, this bitter dream did end
Part Three: The Summit
A year had passed since he set out, determined to survive
To save himself from who he was, but shadows still did thrive
One night, he was high in the hills, beneath Moon’s eerie glow
When once again, the sin he’d fought to contain started to show
Though not so strong as it had been, almost a year before
It still was always in his blood and this he could not ignore
He knew what he was looking for, but still the road was dark
And all the pent up anger had left more than just a mark
However, on a brighter rise he saw where he must go
The summit of the mountain range, swathed in sparkling snow
So he continued to traverse the path towards the light
Yet just as he had reached the top, the day did turn to night
All his fears returned to him, he tried to block them out
But all the certainties he’d gained, once again turned to doubt
The shadows he had left behind came to the peak so high
But he held on with all his might, prepared for one last try…
Part Four: The Final Endeavour
For liberation he must surge, from this cruel tyranny
The harmful nature it had brought, from which he must break free
Oppression as he once knew it, would vanish if he won
And so he struggled forth once more, the battle had begun
Still on the summit, he could see how plagued he truly seemed
For all the time he’d lived in fear, and all the times he’d screamed
Fulfilment he had never known, but now it was the time
To be righted of his wrong deeds, and punished for his crime
A crime against the world of light, a crime he did repent
He let the vice pour out of him, ‘til all of it was spent
Innocent now once again, at long last he was free
Emancipation he now felt, from emotional debris
Returning to his home at last, greeted with open arms
The word spread through the village, the factories and farms
The little boy who’d run away, had come to their domain
Returned as a new, harmless soul, ready to start again
Finale
As I lie awake, sun seeps through the window in my room
I feel a surge of contentment as light expels the gloom
Through my exploits I can see that happiness isn’t cheap
But I am here, happy with life, I took the essential leap…
So as the sun softly rises, I try to get some sleep
