-In life, both were in positions acting for the benefit of their societies (Hunter Cadet and Police Detective), but everything changed when they were murdered in cold blood (Nanashi was killed by Adramelech and Jim Corrigan died in a cement-filled barrel in a river due to the actions of criminals).

-In death, within an ominous realm brimming with anguished souls (Yomotsu Hirasaka and Limbo), both would encounter mythological top gods (Dagda and God/The Presence/Voice), who resurrected them, additionally giving them supernatural strength and powers by binding them to wrathful entities in some way (Dagda himself and Aztar/The Spectre Force). They first used this new power to save a girl in love with them just in time (Asahi and Clarice Winston) shortly after their resurrection.

-However, both were revived as undead beings (Walking Corpse/Ghost) in new, supernatural roles where they effectively became servants to their divine savior (Nanashi becomes Dagda's Godslayer and puppet, helping further the deity's goals whether he likes it or not, while Jim becomes the Specter, an agent of the Presence that is tasked with confronting and comprehending evil) their purpose henceforth being to enact the deities wrathful, eliminative will, so they were thrust into a life of battle, regularly conflicting with evil beings they're supposed to confront and slay that troubled their worlds (Dagda wants to kill all gods and demons using Nanashi as his Godslayer and pawn, and the Spectre is God's Wrath Incarnate who eliminates evil and punishes the guilty for their crimes, commonly killing those deserving in brutal ways).
