Sera's Past End - Patterns
After sitting down in a close by restaurant, Mr. Vaz ordered a couple of warm drinks. Her mind was still a mess and she was struggling with thinking straight. Normally she would never have accepted such a questionable invitation from a man that she did not know. Now that she thought about it she was getting nervous, there was no way that anything could be done about Clara's situation. Appeals in the Alizthea court system were rarely approved historically from what she had read and that is the only thing that could probably get Clara out of her current predicament.
"Well, Miss? May I ask for your name?"
"My name is Sera," She said in a more brusque way than she was used to.
"Miss Sera I guess you are curious about what I told you earlier about your friend. Just to be clear I am not selling any weird promises, to tell you the truth, the Alizthea system is extremely corrupt and after you tell me more about your friend's case I will give you some of my opinions about her case. I am an investigative journalist of sorts trying to uncover the corruption that is going on with the Regulatory Council, which in my opinion it has become little more than a front for legalized slavery after the Accords. Now start with your friend's case from the beginning, begin with her background, and then proceed with the case with as much detail as you can, from beginning to end" He took out a notebook and was ready to start taking notes.
Then it was as if a light turned on in her head and suddenly Sera recognized the name that had been slightly familiar before.
"Mr. Derick, are you perhaps the author of "The Injustices of the Alizthea Justice System"? If you are, I read your book but I can't say that I found it more than a rant against the RCAE" Sera would usually be more polite about saying things like this, but at the moment she wasn't thinking feeling wanting to be polite to anyone and even though better, her mind was still moving as if she was going through some thick muck.
Mr. Vaz put the notebook down and started rubbing his eyes.
"Sigh..... I am the author of that book, I am surprised you found a copy of it since the RCAE has done its utmost to make it disappear from the world. I must admit that I published it over a decade ago in a bout of inspiration due to some personal circumstances. Every word in it is true, but my experience at the time was not that big and thus my sources were not as great, should have researched more, and found more cases instead of just talking like a tabloid without a proper source. Because of it, the RCAE has made me look like a crazy wacko who has it against them. That's why I have taken my time gathering proper evidence this time, the problem is that there is a lot of obfuscation with that organization, but I am making slow progress. The RCAE is an international organization with very deep roots in almost every nation. But after you tell me your friend's case I can see if there are any patterns that I have seen in other cases, sounds good?"
Sera still had her doubts about the guy, but she could try to comply with what he wanted at least. Then she went and talked about Clara's background, from what she knew about her. From being abandoned to growing up in an orphanage, doing odd jobs, and then to the court case. Sera explained how she liked reading about the law since she was an aspiring lawyer, but how the case suddenly started to take an unexpected turn. How the testimonies of the witnesses were inconsistent and how Clara's lawyer was confident about her being declared not guilty despite all of that. Just thinking about earlier in the day made her tear up, but just speaking about everything made the awkwardness that she had felt about the case feel even more prominent than before.
"By the way what were you doing in Clara's courtroom today if you were not familiar with her?"
"I came to Kenosha to investigate a certain facility that if I can find any proper proof would be a beginning step towards proving the systemic corruption of the RCAE. Today I had a meeting that was postponed and just so happened that I entered that courtroom since it's open to the public. I try to investigate the different cases as much as I can since the RCAE blocks all sorts of information from being accessed after individuals are sentenced. Anyhow your friend's case follows a pattern that I have been trying to identify, if you have time and are interested give a glimpse of these files that I have here, they are from different nations, but some are from Kenosha themselves".
Sera took the files and started reading the case files. There were notes in neat handwriting on the side of some pages that indicated some of his doubts and inconsistencies. There was a certain pattern in here, but she could not understand it until she got the full picture of it. After a while of reading in silence while Derick analyzed Clara's case.
"There is something in here, but I can't figure out exactly what. Maybe if I had more time or knowledge"
"Well if the pattern that I follow is correct your friend was screwed from the beginning. She is the perfect sample for the RCAE which is looking for more inmates to bring into their mines at Dracoveil. They usually look for essence users without a background or who don't have any strong political backing in their nation. When an Essence User is involved in any sort of crime suddenly witnesses change testimonies, proof appears from thin air, deals are removed from the table, etc.... In addition, some cases are even worse, and some of the essence users with leaner sentences get sent to Dracoveil for stupid infractions in lower security prisons. I began investigating this in my home nation thinking that it was just local corruption, but started to notice that it was something way more systemic in the whole RCAE system"
Sera did not know if what Derick was saying was the truth or if he was making it up, but she had seen that same pattern in Clara's case. If this was true she did not know even where to begin in helping her friend.
"Is there anywhere that I can learn more about these patterns or cases, if what you are saying it's true I would like to learn more about them and maybe do something about it. I just want to know why in damnation this had to happen to my friend and if possible help her"
"Well I am a part of a certain organization whose main focus is to uncover the truth about what the RCAE is doing, if you are interested I can make an introduction, we always welcome anyone that is wanting to pursue the truth, the name of the organization is Veritas"

__________________________________
Okay now this is truly the end of Sera's Past arc sheesh it has taken me a minute and so to get here. I feel I am getting better at writing stories and dialogue but it still takes some time.
These Sera's past sequences were never intended to tell its own story but for some reason it did. The problem is that it ended up being way longer than I thought it would ever be and even introduced a character that I had no idea was going to become important now and int he future (Clara).
I feel I have written enough stories of the court process from the point of the accused instead of a person closed to them and I enjoy writing that perspective too.
Anyways I think I will actually write an epilogue for Sera's past sequence since I just got inspired depends on how the art comes out.
