Looking at the new starters, I couldn't help but notice they chose pretty unremarkable species as starters this generation. I guess the owl is ok since there's only one other, and a tiger is much different from a house cat or any of the other big cats we've had so far, so I'm ok with that too, but we've had two other water seal families already! Still, I'm glad the fire starter fits in my Chinese Zodiac head canon! In any case, I think all three of them may just be a little too cute and cuddly for my taste. I'm looking forward to seeing what their second and final stages look like.Related content

Eh... Mew isn't a house cat. It's based on a Jerboa. His name just means 'new' for new art species. Β°xD
This was even write in the Wiki, but some Β funny guy change this to a cat embryo.

I founf it funny, when you did draw more cat Pokemon. I mean, Espeon, Umbreon, Leafeon, Absol and more, to make this Fire Starter more pissed off. XD

man, i didn't know if i should add espeon since most of the other eevelutions look more like foxes than cats, so i just decided to not include any of them. i never really thought of absol as a cat, but i guess it's face is kinda feline.
And you know what, Mew may be an embryo/Jerboa, but it has enough cat like traits to be included. XD but yeah, a lot of people are also arguing about whether or not mew is a cat over on the tumblr post. I added it on a whim so I'm not that concerned. If it makes you feel better, you can say Mew has some cat genes in it since it was the first species from which all other pokemon descended. And who's to say this isnt the reason why there are so many feline and rodent pokemon, since mew looks like a cat and mouse!

It is official, that Espeon is based on a Nekomata, a two tailed cat! :'D
To mee they don't even look like foxes, cause their very tiny paws and cat short muzzle. Β°xD

theyΒ have sandslash, which is kinda like a pangolin? and shaymin is a hedgehog. i think i'm ok with there being so many cats and dogs, considering how many feral cats and dogs japan has it kinda makes sense that they would be a big part of their ecosystem

BtwΒ Poochyena and Mightyena are also cats. Cause they are hyenas and those Animals are from the cat family, even they look more like dogs. xD

and i think hedgehogs and pangolins are so unique there just needs to be one of them. there are a lot of species that haven't had even one appearance yet so i'd like to see some of those get made into pokemon first before we revisit ones that are already represented.
but yeah, you're probably right about them needing to give cats and dogs a break

Think bigger picture, they're integrating more animals of the same species so it's more like our world.
For the record, Hawaii have a connection to owls. Our sea lion friend is going to be more connected with the warm water ones plus circus seals. The cat, nothing to argue but that it's possibly following the Chinese Zodiac theory.
Other than that I like where they went with the starters.

i do agree with the owl and cat, i can see a clear difference between the more barn owl look of this new starter vs hoothoot's more horned owl look, and we havent had a tiger before, but off the top of my head i dont see seals as being a species that needed more representation. you have spheal's walrus and seels...seal, so i guess this is a sea lion, but...as a kid i could never tell the difference between sea lions and seals, they're just so similar. i'm hoping with the nose thing they've got going with it that they'll go more with an elephant seal design in later stages, or something more interesting like that, but right now it's just not different enough for me, especially since samurott already had kinda a sea lion vibe going on. it's still really cute, i hope it doesnt look too much like a clown in the end XD

I see you points but here me out. The Oshawott line are ALL based on Sea Otters, Otters have whiskers throughout their lives and can walk on all fours as well as stand on two legs. So, Samurott could be an older otter and while they may look sea lionish it is an otter line which makes way for a pure Seal based pokemon to come through since Seel and Dewgong are sea lions, in fact I think there is an actual animal called a dewgong in the real world. And Spheal's entire line are all Walruses.Β

and dont forget pokemon are monsters. they may be based on things but they dont have to stick with one single reference. just like how patrat are based on prairie dogs but their evolution look more like meerkat, so i dont think we need to limit ourselves in saying a pokemon is one single species and cant be any other. i know samurott is an otter, but it also gave off a sea lion vibe to me. and it's not just me either, as someone else had mentioned it on the wiki too.
also, this new pokemon is the sea lion, because sea lions have visible ear flaps while seals dont.

I've heard that there are a lot of feral cats in Hawaii, plus the Japanese name is derived from the word "tabby", so I think that's a partial link there. Plus with the flammable oils, it seems to have a resemblance to tiki torches, or fire breathing/juggling entertainers that I so often see in hawaiian tourist ads.
But that's just my idea on it!Β

I mean, Japan controls roughly 4000 small islands in addition to their big four (Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu), only around 10% of which are actually inhabited. You'd be amazed how many tiny islands are scattered all over the pacific. When you look at a globe, there's literally thousands you can't even see because they're so small in comparison. The Indonesian Archipelago is somewhere to the order of 17000 islands, it's absolutely nuts.

i wasnt too interested in the owl until someone mentioned it's face looks like a cut apple. i love apple themed things so i hope they go with that!
