Looking at the new starters, I couldn't help but notice they chose pretty unremarkable species as starters this generation. I guess the owl is ok since there's only one other, and a tiger is much different from a house cat or any of the other big cats we've had so far, so I'm ok with that too, but we've had two other water seal families already! Still, I'm glad the fire starter fits in my Chinese Zodiac head canon! In any case, I think all three of them may just be a little too cute and cuddly for my taste. I'm looking forward to seeing what their second and final stages look like.Related content

yeah, you're right, but I feel like they weren't always that cuddly XD like in the past they were cute but also kinda tough looking too? I think that's why i like the fire cat the best, the other two are just downright adorable.
of course, it just makes me want to see what they turn into even more!

Even though I'm choosing Popplio, I'll admit, I'm worried about its evolutions as well. I kinda want it to keep some of the goofy charm of its first stage, but I also really hope it doesn't just get more clown like as it evolves. We already have Mr. Mime, and that's already pushing it. By the way, what do you classify as ugly Pokemon?

I guess when I say ugly I mean gruff, tuff, and grumpy looking. Something like Probopass is more of an ugly design than an ugly pokemon, so I'm not as fond of it as something like Conckeldurr, which I find much more charming.
Other ugly pokemon could include: Seissmitoad, skuntank, magmortar, emboar, walrein, aggron, and venusaur. But to be fair, most of the time it's a pokemon that I'm like, ew that's gross, then I tell myself to like it and soon I grow fonder of it. Like, I never liked Aggron when I first saw it, but then when I decided to use one I started to like it's design more. I still thought it was ugly, but I kinda liked it's ugliness. Maybe I might learn to like Probopass someday.

None of those Pokemon come across as extremely ugly, but they all come across as Pokemon that aren't easy to beat, so I can understand why you like them. As long as you don't like ugly designs like Stunfisk, (it's cry doesn't help it in my book by the way) you're okay in my book

Stunfisk can be cute. I certainly don't dislike it. I think it's cry is hilarious!
And you know what, I'm proud of you for not finding any of those pokemon extremely ugly, but i'm pretty sure it's not their battle prowess that I like about them, since I've never gotten into the meta game. I picked them because they stood out to me, I guess it was just a coincidence they all turned out to be fully evolved pokemon (since evolved pokemon tend to be uglier), but there are unevolved examples too: Patrat, Feebas, and Binacle are all pretty ugly in my opinion.

Finding a fart noise hilarious? I'm questioning your sense of humor so hard right now. Are those "ugly" designs you like for the examples of unevolved Pokemon, because I don't think any of them are that ugly. Of course, to me an ugly design isn't usually an issue (I do have some exceptions, like Stunfisk) for me I usually don't like the meh designs of some Pokemon. Most of the mid evolutions are a good example of what I mean when I say meh, but I'm also not fond of Pokemon like the voltorb and foongus lines. I just don't get into designs that obviously have little inspiration behind them.

well, when i say ugly i dont mean it was poorly designed, i mean the pokemon itself is ugly. like, it's got big fat noses or furrowed brows, or wrinkles everywhere. an ugly pokemon might not be an ugly design, does that make sense? like, you wouldnt call a conkledurr beautiful would you?

Considering I'm reading you're comic, I think I'm at least experienced enough to know that's not the entirety of your humor, I'm just messing with you a bit. Still, I think it's funnier to think of what happened behind the scenes to let us have a Pokemon that makes a fart noise in the game.
And according to Pokemon, if you feed him enough pokeblocks/poffins you can make a conkledurr look beautiful, cute, cool, intelligent, and you might even manage to make him look a little tougher.
But seriously, I get what you're saying, although I think it might be more accurate to say that you like Pokemon that have signs of being tough. While not 100% accurate for all the Pokemon you gave, for the most part if you saw those Pokemon based only on their appearances, you'd assume they could level buildings all by themselves.

i guess that's more or less accurate, but it's not so much their destructive capabilities that draw me to them, rather it's my initial dislike of their appearance that makes me want to explore them as characters.

I don't have a specific type, although I think cool designs tend to be what draw me the most, like umbreon, Sneasel, bisharp, absol, lucario, and magnetric. I think it also helps if that Pokemon looks like it would be fast so Pokemon with slender builds tend to get my approval.
I also think if a Pokemon has a goofy design, I tend to like those designs as well. I actually like Pokemon like Bidoof and Popplio for that very reason.
I think my list can give you a good guess at what my favorite typing is, you want tell me which type you like the best?

i'm guessing you like steel? or electric? i dont have a favorite type, but i always pick the fire starter. it's become almost a burden at this point but i'll stick by it. normal might be the closest to a favorite type if i had to pick one.

Did you not catch how many of them were the dark type? I'm almost a little disappointed you missed that. Normal types aren't a bad choice, I mean there isn't a single one of that type whose gym leaders hasn't killed a few Pokemon in a nuzlocke. Speaking of which, dark type gym leader, will we get one in Alola, or will those guys only ever exist in fanmade Pokemon games?

and considering in japanese it's called the evil type, i doubt we'll ever get a dark type gym, though with pokemon Moon it might be possible? at this point i kinda feel like it's tradition to not have one, at least dark types get represented in the elite four.

To be fair, Fire/fighting starters almost became a tradition, but that changed considering fans were all starting to get annoyed with that (poor tepig, he's still getting hate for being the third one in that trend). I'm certain Gamefreak will eventually give us a dark type gym leader, the real question is when we'll actually get him or her

Silly you! Technically Popplio IS unique. Seel and Spheal are both based on Seals. Popplio looks to be based on Sea Lions. They're both pinnipeds though.

yeah, but technically samurott was also kinda sea lion-ish, plus i could never tell seal and sea lion apart as a kid so to me they arent different enough XD
and spheal's family is more based on the mighty walrus! so at least there's more difference there.

I wonder how the rest of Pokemon in the new region will look like. I hope its not the same issue that X and Y had where we saw mostly old Pokemon and not the new ones. Sure people want to see them because of nostalgia but in my opinion it should be its own thing. Just like how Black and White did.Β

yeah, i didnt play x and y but i heard there was just too many pokemon all over. i liked what black and white did a lot, maybe if some npcs had older generation pokemon but you could only catch the new ones until after a point in the game?

To be honest in Kalos (Pokemon X and Y) there wasn't really much New Pokemon there was only like 72. Black and White had like 156 and it was the only generation to have the most new Pokemon than any other Pokemon game. I hope Sun and Moon can suprass that number because that would be awesome. Yeah I can see people complaining that there is not much of the older Pokemon but still this will be great.Β
