This was my project for Adobe Illustrator portion of class. The prompt was to do a picture of anything in the style of Matisse cutouts: [link]
I was inspired by my trip downtown to DC's Sakura Matsuri Festival as well as the loverly blossoms all around campus.

I mainly focused on playing with positive and negative space and forgot about his tendency to liter his pictures with shapes, so I added some more black. It seemed messy, but someone pointed out that it looks like foliage, and that it feels like you are secretly witnessing a rare sight. I said, sure, it works.

If you cant tell (and there were some who couldnt during the critique), the red thing is a fox and the black thing behind him is the tree's trunk. It is not a deer. ;_;

Another thing about Mattisse is that, since his work are paper cut outs, I had to do all those shapes with the pen tool instead of copy pasting. they still look relatively the same, but less regular than they could have been.

Needless to say, having had an Illustrator class before, I was already familiar with the pen tool coming in while others in the class where still struggling with it. So I had an advantage, which makes me feel sad I couldn't do something more awesome.
