ZeroGravityCroquet — Tradition does not mean good.

Description Just because it's something that you, your father, your father's father, etc. did, doesn't mean it's somehow right or better than trying something new.

"But this is the way we've always done it!" is not an excuse to try and escape change.

It is arrogant to reject change because it's undesirable. Clinging to tradition just because you don't want to change what you're doing is foolish and pointless.

Because someone is bound to misinterpret my words, I'm going to do quick-clarification: I'm not somehow endorsing a state of constant change, or saying that all traditions are evil. I'm talking about the people that complain when others try to change aspects of certain traditions. I'm talking about the ones that go "this is the way we've always done it, I don't want to change it, and I'm going to bitch like an uncivilized child about it because I hate new things."

Made with `DoItForTheLulz 's stamp brush.

I always say that, especially about weddings. I haven't had my ceremony yet because I can't afford it, but I got legally married in an office because it was more financially viable for me and my husband to be legally a couple. We had a lot of relatives annoyed because they weren't invited because they thought that was the ceremony (it was just us and 2 witnesses otherwise we would have to pay) and we did it in secret. I told them the truth about why and that they would all be invited to the ceremony so they all shut up. I want to wear black and not be walked down the isle by my dad because he doesn't own me (besides my husband proposed with out telling him because he knew he would object).

Sometimes we gotta break tradition to try new things and see what we're comfortable with and to satisfy our wants.

I think it depends on the tradition and what sort of change you are trying to bring to it.

Obviously this doesn't apply to every single tradition. I simply dislike people that reject change because they're too set in their ways to deviate at all.

Like the argument about how alcohol is more dangerous than weed on a documentary I watched. The guy goes "Beer is part of American tradition! Why would we do away with something that's so deeply rooted here? It's tradition!" orr something like that... It's stupid.

"Beer is part of American tradition" even without counting the tradition thing, holy shit, how can someone be so wrong?

You wanna know when you can claim beer is part of your tradition? When it's the official national drink.

Didn't notice

If we stuck to tradition, my great grandpa would have been able to shoot an 'Injun' when he came to America. "You can't shoot Native Americans!" "Why not? We've always shot them (among other things) before! It's tradition! It's ingrained in the very genetics of my trigger finger!" "No." "Okay. ;A;"

I could name quite a few current traditions among the people of the world regarding genital mutilation (among other things) that fall under this stamp's dominion.

There is a logical fallacy called "appeal to tradition".
It's a fallacy based on the notion that because something was done for a long time, it is inherently a good thing to do.
The reason it's a fallacy is obvious, and to use it to justify rejecting change encourages stagnation of a culture and morality.

If everything stayed traditional, women would still be property, blacks would still be slaves, interracial marriage and divorce would be illegal, et cetera. A lot of people have done fucked-up things because of 'tradition'.
