The more intense the emotion, the more unstable he gets.
So lovestruck, extremely happy (in other words, petting his head), extremely sad, etc

Or remove his collar
THAT makes him flip out
cause he doesn't have a neck
instead, that area is constantly dripping ink, so he hides it with his thick collar.
