Description
Now is the time to start with some Dragon Age: Inquisition pieces. I couldn't wait for the game and I was really amazed while playing it. I enjoyed it a lot. But I really can not get over one thing: As some of you can imagine one major thing I love about the Bioware games is the unique way the companions are implemented. In each game I found someone that I really fell in love with - And I somehow could be with that character (Okay... I had to wait for the mod until I could finally be with my beloved Morrigan in DA: OriginsAnd this time I just waited and waited for the Gender Bug to happen to have Cassandra by my site.
Yep, in the end I was rejected and remained forever alone... Starring at Cassandra and Morrigan in the garden.
Cassandra has been extracted by with painstaking care and help of Thanks a lot to you guys!
I captured the The Inquisitor from the game and changed the facial expression a bit.
The background is somewhere stolen from Google... Thehe. :3

Oh completely! There's a mod for the PC version that allowed for romancing of any character by any type of Inquisitor. Heck, there's even a mod that let's you romance EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER at the same time with no repercussions, lol. You even get to see all the romance cutscenes, except for a few cases (eg: the final embrace scene before going to final credits has an order of preference).
Best of all, some of the lines are even voiced for the Femquisitor/Cassandra romance. The lines that aren't just get silence and subtitles, but it's totally functional! If you are on console, it's a bit harder, but still doable with game save editors. Best of all, this is totally allowed, as it only affects the single player.
I did this back with Mass Effect. The funny thing there is that there were entire romances that were (more or less) FULLY voiced, but removed for whatever reasons (eg: Miranda and Femshep in ME2, Kaidan and BroShep in ME3).
Anyways, I ramble. Looking forward to your next work! Cheers!

...? Really? This debate?
That's a bit of a double standard view on it, IMO, b/c if it is as you say, then the same would apply to Cassandra. Again, much of this is essentially cut content, the rest is head-canon adjustment (little different from ME3's ending mods). Not so much "fixing" as "choice." In any event, the story never presents these relationships as abusive, which is a good thing, b/c that subject is not some joking matter.
I've seen this debate sink into a mire, both at BW Forums and the Nexus. Even worse at Fanfiction, when such pairings are written despite popularity/canon. I've lost contact with good friends who had abuse heaped upon them by reviewers, and known too many people in real life who dealt with similarly abusive garbage. I'd rather not relive that on DA, which should be en environment conducive to sharing ideas and inspiration. So, I will simply state that I've seen your work, and find you a talented artist.
So please, I'd rather avoid having this discussion to get out of hand, thanks.

Because I was blocked from replying, for whatever reason, I will just add this here...I felt the need to address one last time, though I feel that going too in depth in this conversation is disrespectful to the artist, whose art page should not become some battleground for this debate...
No need to apologize, ironically or not. I understand your concerns, but what I choose to do (or not) in my playthrough doesn't have to have any effect on what you do in yours. Nor does it make any playthrough less valid. I mean, this is the same sort of petty debate that was brought up against Steve Cortez in ME3 (as if a character had to spontaneously become gay/straight). Moreover, I reiterate that, per the story, this is not a situation where abuse would even be involved, thankfully. Your Shep/Inquisitor can be "the one," regardless of barriers. I mean, should I really apologize for wanting Tali to be romanced by FemShep, if I so choose in my "nth" run of the game? Should Adaar romancing Solas be considered detestable?
Moreover, I completely respect your choices as well. Forgive me if I misremember, but I can't recall Ash, Kaidan, or Cullen ever being listed as bi or homosexual (and in certain cases, they are glaringly hetero, content edits or no). However, I have no qualms about folks who choose to portray otherwise in art/fiction. Similarly, please accord me the same respect. Is the relative lack of inclusiveness in our popular culture unfortunate? Certainly, I'll be the first to acknowledge that, it isn't as if my life has been one of privilege (although more from a cultural/racial POV, as opposed to orientation). But this is a fantasy story, and I could hardly condemn someone else's decisions in their own personal canon.
Please feel free to PM me. No promises on replies, I consider my fellow DA community members as friends, disagreements or no, and I have no desire for extra drama in what is ostensibly my free time. I apologize to CrystaliqEffects if you feel like I created unnecessary drama, and to DorianPavus if you feel like I've been disrespectful to you or your choices. I hope both of you have enjoyed a constructive new year, both in your art and personal lives.

Somehow I was under the assumption that there is nothing possible in DAI. I knew about ME, but didn't try this since I thought there is no VO, but now... Changes a lot! Wow!
I was sad that there was no VO in DAO, but in the end it was quite handy for me as a female character to romance Morrigan. Still remember it sooo well.

I too agree that it's a damn shame that Cass ended up just like Ashley in ME3, especially since nothing hints at her being straight (unless you count reading Varric's version of "Fifty shades of gray" ) and seem to put her job over her love life.
So like your title says she makes the exception for The Inquisitor how Bioware didn't make this open to both genders, even if you lock it to human-only, is beyond me.
Disappointing but at least Sera is still around.

I totally felt heartbroken when I heard about Cassandra being straight, and felt even worse when staring the game and liking Cass even more than I expected. The day it was mentioned that Cass will be a companion in the Dragon Age Inquisition I was really hoping for a F/F romance with her, as I really enjoyed her character in DA2. And it seemed for me like an obvious choice for me, with her character and looks somehow she fitted well as a non-straight option. Like, come on, my gayday i never wrong! But I guess Bioware again thought that they will try avoid the cliche of presenting the tough female with strong personality as a potential female intreset. I felt the same way when finding out that Ashley and Jack weren straigt in ME series, and somehow I've always felt there was some clear tension between femshep and Ash... I don't have anything against the female romances we got so far, Leliana romance is still one of my favourite, but somehow I get the feeling we always get the nice, sweet girl, like for example Liara, Merrill or Josie. The romances were fine, sure, but the moment I had the chance to romance Ash, Jack or Tali as a female I would totally ditch Liara. Same with Cass here. I would love the opportunity to romance Cassandra as female Inquisitor and I would rather have her bi and Josie straight, as Josie's romance seems to be tailed more as a typical fairytale straight romance.

I'm a bit relieved to see that I share this pain with a lot of people. I was so excited about having Cassandra as companion as well. And the more information she told me about her, the more I liked her... She is not only attractive, she's one of the characters I like from the inside. (Even the relationship to the maker is somehow bearable.
)
About Bioware's decision who's bi, who's not... Well... That's possibly one of my favorite topics to discuss. Authors should not be afraid of borrowing a cliché... A character is what you make out of him/her. ^^ I really hate that Jack isn't open for women... It's so... WTF?! Also Morrigan is not understandable to me... If you are a woman and also love women you know exactly how you and they can be, I guess we know every type of a character could possibly exist there. ^^ Why can't Ashley and Miranda be attacted to women as well?
I mean in general we get that sweet type you mention, but what about Sera? Doesn't fit in the pattern. ^^ I guess the wish to be "realistic" and let some characters be straight, bi or gay is for games like this not always a good choice... So many heart broken people. To quote a comment of a friend, DorianPavus, at the bottom of the comments here: "This is a fantasy universe, after all. We can have real life in real life, we don't need heteronormative bullshit in the only queer friendly video game ever. If straight cis people want to play straight games, they can literally pick one from the 10.000.000 out there. They can fucking let us have Dragon Age, please." <<< Couldn't be said any better.

Oh, I definitely agree that Cass is great both on the outside as on the inside. I love the fact that she is so focused, motivated, loyal and takes no bullshit and at the same time, she's having the softer side too. I actually never thought about her realtionship to the Maker. I guess it wasn't as striking for me as Leliana's faith.
Yeah, Sera doesn't fit the pattern of being the seet romance, but that the exception to the rule, Isabela maybe too. And Sera generally doesn't fit any pattern, that's the part of her charm I guess.
Well, I can appreciate the though of having realistic characters, but to begin with it is not a realistic world, it is a fantasy setting, so we don't have to have the same pattern here as we have in real world. So, I agree with DorianPavus on this one. And if we're going this way of making the setting of the game more realistic why not add such parameters like a character becoming hungry, cold, tired after waving a heavy sword and so on and so on. Why focus only on the romance aspect?
Secondly, maybe before stating someone's sexuality they should make a research of how the fans perceive the character, cause I believe most of the fandom didn't really thought of Cassandra as straight. And maybe even make a poll of whom the people are willing to romance, because how many straight guys wanted Cass as a LI? As far as I remember most of them were dissappointed with the looks and such. If the votes are half/half why not make the person bisexual.
Or they could simply make all the potentail LI bi and have for example an option at the beginning to cross if you want to have your characters gay/bi/straight for those afraid that having a gay character would change their unstable sexuality
On the other hand it was nice to have a totally gay characters, and it truly add to their realism, at least in Dorian's case, as we had his background history. But at the same time some things were missing for me. Like for example being able to acknowledge that Dorian is gay (or Krem is trans) and say that you fully accept/understand/support it. Instead if we wanted to know the character deeper we only had the choice of asking probably uncomfortable questions. I also would like a dialogue with Dorian when we play a female gay character in romance with Josie or Sera and exchanging the experiences like "how it is to be gay for you" this sort of thing.
And another thing is Sera, as despite she's being the gay female character, there's no specific dialogue of it or any backstory or anything. That's pretty weak lesbian representation if I were honest.
Yeah, enough with my rant

ZerOneSplashArt In reply to svenskalovenska [2015-01-19 18:08:01 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I really appreciate that Cassandra's faith is more "subtile". Of course she loves the inquisitor immediately when he approves to her faith in the maker, but she is also understanding when you're not. There are some really nice dialogues.
Isabela is actually my 2nd favourite love story in all DA's. It was just great to be with her... The fact that she was important in the storyline at the end was incredibly awesome. ^^
That the player could chose the sexuality would be awesome! I wrote my bachelor thesis about this topic and I proposed this solution amongst others. I would copy and paste, but it's in german.
I liked the topics about Dorian and Krem a lot... Yeah, we'll have to see... I also think that Sera's "background" is really weak. Her story could have been much deeper.
Hehe, I liked your "rant".

this is a really lovely piece. its a shame Cassandra wasn't an option for both male and female characters. Same for Cullen. While they are now deemed 'straight' I just don't see it. I mean I'm straight but I really love the idea of those two with either gender as they don't feel 'straight' to me. Bisexual yes but not straight.
Luckily its what we have fan created things for. Like this which is really beautiful.
I mean I love Bioware games because they don't stick to the same thing like most companies making mainly straight characters. There is no realisim in having all straight characters. I like some sense of realism even if its small. Which is a reason I love Bioware games. They still have some ways to go but they are miles ahead of everyone else. For me they should have had more bi characters and only a few that were straight and gay. As for me that will be the best direction for them to go in. Well that is just my opinion. As for me it seems they went forward with DA2 and went partly back with DAI.
But have more diverse types. As we have yet to see a Bi or gay knight in shining armour be they male or female. I had really hoped Cassandra and Cullen would be bisexual KISA character types in Inquisition.
Sorry noticed your other comments so wanted to say what I thought.

I like to stress out, that DA2 is in this context really the frontrunner of all the games, though it was quite disliked unfortunately. (I loved it. ) I hope that Bioware will go in that direction, they must stay brave!
I would like to give you a compliment, because you can see things so open minded. I can be also fan of straight couples and feel with them, I hope there would be more neutrality in the world. :3 Especially when it comes to fiction it's super necessary and useful for great stories.

Exactly. Then we feel quite the same way!
Leliana was at least a fallback plan, but in Inquisition I couldn't really fall in love with Sera or Josephine. Tried a playthrough with Josephine though. It was more funny than romantic.
In Origins it was easier to be with Morrigan since there was no voice over for the warden. But I really don't wanna miss voice over for main characters in general.
I have to say that you can have a reaaally feminine male inquisitor. xD This wasn't possible for Hawke, Shapard, a Warden without mods or so. But it's not the same at all. I really loved my female inquisitor (the one in the picture here), the voice and everything was so charming. ^^

I always had to stick to to Liara in every playthrough. I can't help it, it just feels right.
Yes, the duel for example... I'm a huge fan of romance and I'm mushy as well. But somehow this relationship was far over the top.
What I really liked was Leliana's sorrow about her friend and her threatening me. ^^
What theory of Sera? Of course I looked into the possibility to be with her, especially because she's for women only. It was funny to watch on YouTube, but the inquisitor is to be taken seriously for me. :3 My Hawke always fooled around, I think it fits to that character. But the inquisitor is the damn savior of the world and not a kind of "mayor by chance". So I'm very curious about the theory.
