Description This is my rendition of Alex Mercer from the game Prototype. A product of love and nurturing, I spent a good part of the summer on it, through trials of learning how to paint in CS2.

It's also before I found screenshots of Prototype on the Giant Bomb website.

This was a compilation of references - I used a pic of Sam Wit (actor from Smallville), and a little of Rob Lowe (for the eyes) but for the most part the end result is my own rendition of Alex Mercer...
Alex is HOT...

Anyways, I may need your advice on this one guys.
You see, I've had this internal struggle: I'd like a background in it, however I don't want it to detract from the detail I put into it. Should I leave it like this, or attempt a background image?

Great work on the painting and attention to detail especially on the face. I also particularly like the detail on the eyes, brows and the zippers. I love your choice of colors for the skin tones and the lips. Nice proportions too, the face looks extremely realistic. I also like the blurring effect at the ends of the scarf/cloak.

I'm actually not familiar with Prototype but it looks like the hood is too small for the head, maybe you can increase the size in the base area. Also, it seems the detail is somewhat lacking in the cloth areas, making the level of detail seem unbalanced. Maybe you can try to add seams or textures to the hood and jacket to balance out the level of detail across the whole image.

My opinion is that you should put up a background. I think this will give more life/realism to the character in terms of actually situating him in an environment.

Overall I think this is really good e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)" /> Hope this helps!

Very nice work you did on the eyes; and you've definitely captured Alex's usual expression.

Once again, congrats for the great coloring. I'd say this one looks even more realistic than Grimmy.

Thank you so much!

What I'll probably do is make a wallpaper-ish one with a background. That should satisfy both perspectives.

He is hot, isn't he?

You're welcome!

OMG I would love to see it!

Totally! and these eyes!
He's incredibly hot!
But there was a moment when I got scared of him a bit.He said "No,they're dead...they're all dead...except me..." and he has that evil smile on his face LoL but I still love him xD

He is looking great so far, such details! <3
I can definitely see a background, it kind of feels a bit empty without one. But, as others pointed out, a simple one that doesn't steal the attention.
Maybe darker on the corners, lighter in the centre. Something.

Thank you very much!

I had the same feeling. Something. I just have to figure out what that somthing is! XDDD

I might go for a simple, faint cityscape behind him. I'm not sure.

That would definitely look good behind him.
Good luck!

niiice. um...i'd attempt background, but keep it simple, like a gradient of a grayish color...no patterns or anything crazy.

nice job, though!

Thank you for your comment!

True. I was thinking the same thing - maybe a wash of the skyline or something, nothing too outrageous.

I'm happy that you liked it!

I am very fond of how you made the face as Alex is an attractive guy with piercing eyes. The only thing I can think of and I am not even sure if it would add enough to the picture, is putting more of the inhuman along with him.

Alex is pretty much a walking apocalypse and that could be brought out a bit more in the background. I love and fav'd the picture so I obviously am fine with it as is but figured I would try to help with your background thinking.

Thank you for the thoughtful response, first of all.

I'm happy you noticed the eyes. The thing that I remember most while playing the game is that stare of his, and I wanted (above all) to translate that into my painting.

I was at one point considering widening the canvas to make a wallpaper. I would add more of the viral strands so that they spidered outwards, maybe have a cityscape in the background...I might still do that.

Could always show the ruined city behind him. It is as much his fault as it is Elizabeth Greene's. A creature such as he tends to leave its mark on the places they go.
