Description The flagship of my gallery for the moment. Inicially it was a simple sketch in black and white, just to prove myself that I could still use perspective and couloring. However, as most things that I do, the excitement overruled me. I started shadowing, coloring, detailing and painting like a madman. There were like 3 days of artistic berserk, a file of over 13 mbs and like 30 layers.

AND even after all that, the result still seems strange. maybe its because of the cloud/nebulae coverage. It its made in a more realistic look, while the wrecks are in a more cartoonish style. It just seems bizarre to me...

I think it's the clouds on the top-left thta makes this bizarre. Other than that, everyhting else fits magnificently!

zerreitug In reply to Viscious-Speed [2006-08-19 00:47:54 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, they look a little out of context, especially among so many cotton like clouds (I didn't knew how to end the cloud coverage, so making blurry ones sounded like a simple alternative)
Thanks for the comment.

This looks fantastic. The first thing that struck me was the excellent choice in colors and values. I love how the yellow and the cyan tones complement each other, and the contrast is increased by the black sky and lighter clouds. I also really like the more subtle contrast between the soft clouds and the harsh lines of the debris.

The overall composition is great; the variety in shapes and sizes makes it very dynamic, and I love how the debris gets cut off at the edges. The perspective of the linear shapes adds a sense of depth that's completed by the subtle stars in the background. Awesome work!

Wow! you're the first one to make such extense analisis of one of my works. Thank you a lot !
The colors were chosen at first by mere chance. I always knew the debris should be yellow (I'm fan of some homeworld artwork, and they use lots of yellows), but the sky passed through a strange process: I thought green should be the natural choice, but it appeared like a forest, so I hue'd it all around the color spectrum till I reached this cyan tone. It looked better than the rest, so that's what I choose at the end. Its good to know I made the right choice .
The rest of the atributes you mention were kind of instinctive, I said to myself that it was common sense, but maybe it is some kind of artistic sixth sense. Who knows...?
Thank you for your analisis, greately appreciated!

You're welcome. It's nice to know that my comments are appreciated.

I wouldn't be surprised if you did have some sort of instinctual understanding of color; it's really not that uncommon for artists to have a feel for what colors work well and what colors don't even without any training.

Perspective is one of the hardest things for me to do better, that and muscles . I only hope I'll be as good as you someday...

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

zerreitug In reply to AlicornMoonstar [2006-07-29 15:00:08 +0000 UTC]

Well, muscules its also a chalenge for me, too many curves and strange forms!
With perspective, practice also makes the master. Remember to start with only one focal point and using only basic geometries (boxes above all). I started with rooms, the outside of buildings, or in this case, random geometries. Then you could try two focal points with more complicated things, and so on (I'm still scared of the 3 focal points, I've never did anyone with those)
As all artist around here say, practice, practice, practice. Also, what they don't say its: Be patient. Still objects tend to take very long to draw, and there is no way of evading that reality (unless you use a 3d program).

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

AlicornMoonstar In reply to zerreitug [2006-07-29 15:42:52 +0000 UTC]

Oh I know all about being patient. Even though I am not that good yet it has taken me years to draw things as well as I can now...Something about being unable to make the lines and shapes I see in real life match what is coming out of whatever I'm drawing with . Seeing something as the shapes that make up it rather than as a whole is still hard for me...

And this goes right on my favourites list! Very nice indeed - I love the shapes and the composition. Something about it draws the eye in, and is just fascinating to look at! (: THanks for sharing this one!

superb creation. that cartoonlike 3d wreck is soooo sweet. and i love the clouds also, they definitely not ruining this. also composition of colors is very nice. though yellow and blue are opposites, but you've blended them together amazingly. yes, i love it a lot.

thanks. Actually, till now I didn't noticed that I used oposite colors, too strange it doesn't look weird (je, je... this is the moment to say "That's because I'm too good!", but guess I need a bigger ego to say things like that...)

Creo que es importante ser excesivamente critico con uno mismo. Ayuda a perfeccionar lo que haces. Lo unico malo de ello es que causa que los demas se preocupen demasiado... Ya ves...
