Since when does Zeruda draw backgrounds?!I don't know. I kinda got carried away. Sucks in the end, but considering I never do BGs... well, it's not too bad.
SO! If you don't get why Link has pink hair and Zelda has black hair, then you are either not much of a Zelda fan or too young to understand. And anybody should be able to pick up on the red string thing.
I don't know what the swirl is.... voice of the gods, perhaps. I love these two. Kinda went with a more cartoony/anime look to capture the old style. And, the base palette for this entire image is EXACT to the official art. Har. A few minor tweaks to Link to follow along the lines of Akira Himekawa's manga. :>
LOTS of problems, but I spent more time on this than I should have, so I don't quite care anymore.

OK, I get the pink haired Link (his sprite, not official artwork, had pink hair) but why does Zelda have black hair? I played both the remake and the original aLttP, and I distinctly remember her having blonde hair. And a veil

No, Link's Awakening is it's own game. The remake of ALttP is the GBA version which included Four Swords.

Seeing Zelda with black hair is quite confusing, but that (as well as Link's pink ALttP hair and some other features) makes this picture interesting.
Oh, and I don't get the red string. :/

You need to watch the old Japanese A Link to the Past rap commercial. Zelda had black hair in the commercial, and Link's pink hair is based on his sprite's pink hair in the game. It's something that most people won't get unless they are old enough to remember these things.
The red string is to symbol that Link and Zelda are soul mates. It's from East Asia myth, found in both Chinese and Japanese legend. In Chinese legend, the lunar god Yue Xia Lao is in charge of match-making, which is why the scene is at night.

Yeah, I've played A Link to the Past and watched the Japanese commercial.
But you rarely see Link and especially Zelda with those hairstyles. That's what I meant with "confusing".

In A Link to the Past (the game this piece is based off of), Link's sprite had PINK hair. There was also a Japanese Rap Commercial to advertise this game, and while they gave Link brown hair in it, they gave Zelda BLACK hair.

No. There was no anime series, but there was a cartoon. Link had brown hair and Zelda had blonde in it. The black hair is from the old Japanese Zelda Rap commercial.

This is a very beautiful piece. I love the colors, the expressions, the poses... everything about it really. The only thing that's nagging me is why I can't recall a Zelda with black hair. Pink haired Link I can remember easy, black haired Zelda not so much. The closest I can think of is Zelda 2, but the color for her hair in the sprite was a really dark red, though I think official art still depicted her as being blonde... but this is me being obsessive over something irrelevant to the piece itself, which is very lovely.
