Description
“That’s right, cyar’ika, cough it up, all of it. Breathe.”
It was the same clear voice that had issued the orders with militant urgency, but it had softened in a way that sounded reminiscent of a mother from one of the holo-vids he’d seen a lifetime ago attempting to soothe a frightened child. Overwhelmed by disgust and immense shame for his vulnerability, he feebly attempted to push himself into a sitting position but throbbing hands pleaded against it.
From what he could feel his more pressing wounds had been seen to, sutured up in numb, orderly rows, all but the burns, which were likely the reasons he required a bacta tank session to begin with. For the most part they had scabbed over, and as the coldness of the bacta warmed away he could feel the terrible stinging sensation swiftly returning to them, eliciting an involuntary groan from his aching throat. His faceless rescuer gently eased him into a sitting position with his back against the tank for support. Despite the new position the frontal burns continued their merciless ascent to a maddening degree. His breath hitched as they achieved a new level of un-kriffin’-bearable and he instinctively grasped her hand.
“Easy, just breathe, alright? You’re safe, I’ve got you.”
He squinted bleary-eyed at the source of the voice. He could discern something familiar about her appearance but couldn’t place it. She was Pantoran, a stout woman with indigo skin and dark hair pulled back in a severe bun with a few free-spirited locks hanging about her ears. Intricate tattoos adorned her round face, giving her modest beauty an exotic flair. But it was her eyes that mattered the most in that moment, the kindness in them. She had good eyes.
“Wh…ere am I?” he breathed.
“A Republic ship receiving treatment,” she replied, “Your ID chip is gone but your DNA says you’re a clone. Do you know how you got here?”
He hadn’t the foggiest.
“No.”
“How about your unit? What do you remember?”
Suppressed memories of captivity returned with a vengeance – violation, shame, rage and guilt – all of it. He could feel his grasp on consciousness slipping again but he refused to yield this time, for at that moment a second hazy figure materialized beside them. He barely had to squint to recognize that unmistakable silhouette. His eyes widened in utter terror at something just past the woman’s face. A single word was all he could muster.
“Everything.”

How long does it usually take to make a comic sketch like this?

It varies from comic to comic and I work on them sporadically wherever I have free time. On average I guess I spend 2-5 hours on rendering each individual panel (from initial pencil sketch to completion) depending on complexity. Plus formatting (text, text bubbles, borders) another 2 or so hours.

Thank you so much! Same here with Republic Commando series. That's what I love about fan art though, you can see how other folks interpreted scenes from the books.

It's agony waiting between fellow SW fan artists' posts, webcomics, misc fandom updates, SW Rebels episodes. Gotta pass the time somehow, so I draw. More on the way once finished, glad you like.

There will be once I finish it, and ideally there will be a few more pages to finish up this arc. Sketching everything out is the easy bit, rendering takes time, though I'm getting faster at it. Thank you for your support! I hope the following pages meet your expectations!

Not sure what you mean with the corrupted eyes bit - like what is causing him to panic? He's had bad experiences with that type of medical droid in the past while in Separatist captivity, so here, when for the first time as far as he can remember after Geonosis he's back "safe" in Republic custody, he sees one of those droids again and he suddenly doubts how safe he really is, or if he's back with the Republic at all.
Thanks, glad you like!

the colour of his eyes, they look as though the result of dark side degradation. gauging his reaction, haha, it's exactly as you've described it... you're rather good at conveying the appropriate emotional response

Yeah, been on a bit of a hiatus. I tend to jump around to a bunch of different points in the story depending on which scenes I get inspiration for.

Wow! Another great story and art combined into one! You've done a great job with the wetness effect, something I'm still working on. The panel pacing and expressions and shots used in each work great too.
Keep it up! I love seeing these!

Thank you so much! I think I might do my next tutorial-type-thing on textures as they can be quite troublesome. I kept changing the composition back and forth. I ended up cutting out a bunch of redundant panels to make it read faster. They'll probably be "reconditioned" as it were and edited into a flashback or another scene somewhere down the line. Overall, I'm happy with it as a single page comic. This smaller format is easier to crank out than the super long scrolling ones I've done in the past and I can spend more time rendering the panels. Glad you like!

nimbus2224 In reply to ZetsubouZed [2014-02-05 01:41:17 +0000 UTC]
Haha, that's ok. Sounds efficient. I tend to start off with a 'storyboard' whilst doing my pages.
Sometimes a single page or scene can crop up dozens of differing variations either in perspective or panel-placement and object, it really is a tough decision in the end. I also tend to do it panel by panel so I can enter in each panel into a larger file separately. It really is a lot of work and it's always great to see artists like you making great compositions.
Yep! Keep up the awesome clone trooper-work!

ZetsubouZed In reply to rayn44 [2014-02-04 02:26:20 +0000 UTC]
EEEE! Thank you! Anatomy - man was that a killer in this one. It's one thing to draw from figure models, but drawing them in clothes (or covered in loose drape of cloth that have all manner of crazy folds) is tedious. Emaciated folks are heart-wrenching enough to look at, let alone draw, and it's hard to do so without making them look like corpses.

Oh I so know that! People think if you have a pose reference everything is solved but they don't count the clothes and different physical build and stuff! >__< But you made an amazing job! I really admire and adore your work!
Btw what kind of figure model do you use?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
ZetsubouZed In reply to rayn44 [2014-02-04 22:48:48 +0000 UTC]
Thanks again!
As far as figure models are concerned I typically sketch without reference first to block everything in and can eyeball it pretty good at his point, but if it still looks funny I find references via the internet or taking my own reference of friends or myself in the poses.
I've taken a few legitimate figure classes for school that while I learned a ton about anatomy really should have had an equal amount of clothed modeling sessions so we could learn folds at the same time. That said, observational sketches of random people are probably the most helpful regarding fabric. Hope this helps!

Oh wow your comics never cease to deliver triple A work. From the drenched Bacta look to the detail in the clone's scars and haunted expression on the close up. Truly top tier work. Also if this is who I think it is/ has been I like who much history you're giving these two. Nothing leaves a better first impression than waking up to a lovely face right after a nightmare.

Yeah, had a lot of fun with textures in this one. If you're thinking it's who I know it is, then yes. I'd say love at first sight but I'm fighting the urge to take the easy way out and just ship these two off the bat. Plot comes first. I can't consider any shipping until I know who they are first - hence more comics to develop them. ^_^

This is the first piece of this series I have seen, and apparently I have been missing something. This is a beautiful comic. The coloring is top-notch, and the way you made the male character appear wet is very good. Great work!

ZetsubouZed In reply to BCM00 [2014-02-04 01:37:26 +0000 UTC]
Thank you so much! Yeah, spent a little more time on this one rendering - and surprisingly it didn't take that long at all compared to some of my other digital stuff. Guess I'm getting faster at this. Wet surfaces are a lot more challenging than they seem. "Oh yeah, give it some sharp highlights" doesn't always apply, it really depends on the texture of said surface, some are more gradual. Again, thanks!

Poor Guy... (I'm very strongly suspecting that's Overkill...) His eyes in the second to last panel look so haunted... and the medical droid hovering, when a few comics back some of them were torturing him... Very haunting.

ahem. Yeah, traumatic experience or not those surgical droids are immensely horrifying - gotta love those eyes, man. You'd think of all things they'd want to be fairly neutral faces like C-3PO's or something to relax their patients, but NOOO~
Kudos to Star Wars for all it's intentionally and unintentionally scary bits.
