Description
The Altfeld Defense Industries MP-101 SMG is a dated design now, but remains in wide use. It was designed in the 2230s, and put onto the market in 2237. It received wide acclaim for its rugged reliability - and low price. As a result, it found use across human space in the hands of all manner of users. It was even adopted by the United Earth Republics Systems Enforcement Agency (S.E.A), the interstellar law enforcement of the UER. In the private sector, the MP-101 has become a common sight among security forces. It is rare to see private security that doesn't have at least some of these in use.The early design of the MP-101 was intended to be a sort of 'back to basics' for firearms. While weapons with small electromagnetic rail systems for increased power were beginning to see wide use and experimentation, the designers at ADI considered that a simple tried and true design would be an ideal weapon for the private market. The use of miniaturized railguns in firearms had been born of the need to combat Tassion alloy* based body armor, which had allowed for fairly lightweight and very strong protection for troops. However, while standard weapons could not immediately punch through this armor, a few shots to the same area would be enough to punch a hole in the armor, and injure the wearer. As a result, the MP-101 was designed with control in mind. The somewhat bulky body of the MP-101 facilitates the inclusion of recoil mitigation systems. Fired in short bursts, the MP-101 is a very controllable and potent weapon.
Part of the success of the MP-101, and what led to its adoption by the S.E.A, is its compact size. The large, bulky, and unwieldy magnetic rifles of the time were certainly powerful against body armor - but they were large, bulky, and unwieldy. This is a particular issue on spacecraft and stations, where space is often tight and smaller weapons are much more favored.
The MP-101 is chambered in 9x19 Parabellum, though versions chambered in other calibers also exist. Its double stack magazine holds 30 rounds, and there are various larger size magazines available for the weapon. The MP-101 features three rails, for adding attachments to the weapon. It also features a built in vertical foergrip, which can be folded flush with the body.
The MP-101 was not much of an advancement in any technology, nor was it anything terribly special in any area. But it was cheap, reliable, and controllable. This saw it become a sort of AK-47 of its day, especially in space. It has become a ubiquitous firearm, and a household name - especially in the UER.
*A metal alloy including so called Tassion crystals found within warp space, which creates a much stronger armor than otherwise possible thanks to a unique structure and some unusual traits. Used extensively in ship, vehicle, and infantry armor. Also used in architecture, particularly as supports.
This is part of a sci fi setting of mine called 'Vanguard' I've been posting various works from on the site SpaceBattles for some time now. If you are at all interested in knowing more about what the setting has, I have an infographic with some basic background on the universe and setting here: zeus1257.deviantart.com/art/Va…

I think a backstory and some context for stuff is always a good thing, so it's something I like to put a bit of work into.
