very cool, is that a machine gun its holding or a flame thrower, the body says machine gun the blue light near the tip says flamethrower, or a machine gun with a flamethrower attachment

Excellent design. With the hands as they are, one must question, "Is this a powered suit, or a mech?" Looks very functional, and not overly 'teched-out'.
In WWII, the cage like structures around armored vehicles were primarily to keep grenades off of the top of (mostly) open-topped vehicles. They also serve to provide external storage for personal gear. I agree with the other comments... the caging adds an element that brings the mech/suit much closer to our reality.
My first thought after I saw this was image was, is this the first in a series of Kurosawa inspired, Seven Samurai Mechas? It would be extremely cool if it were.

The cage is from the Stryker LAPC, it's a massive RPG standoff system.

Lovely use of the chicken cage contraption on the head, makes it that much more realistic )

the amount of hardware i recognize in the pic
(to name a few, a front end of a stryker, peq-15's, m-4)
I do wonder how it's going to use the acog though, seeing how the driver's periscopes are on the opposite side of the weapon
