So I put the "mature content" warning on this even though I barely outlined his manhood...y'know, just to be on the safe side.

Movies tend to perpetuate this myth that figure drawing classes are graced each day with gorgeous, fit models. This is FAR from the truth. Art schools do not hire their nude models for their appearance. You're probably going to spend three to five hours every day drawing someone who looks like your mother or your uncle. I guarantee it.

The one exception is when your instructor wants to teach you something very specific about bone structure or musculature. Then you might be privileged to get someone like Techno Viking up there for a model.

I never knew his name, and I only ever called him Techno Viking in my head, but he was my favorite model, and I did a little dance inside each time he and his flaxen hair visited our class. His muscle development meant he could hold a pose perfectly for an hour, he braided his beard like a fantasy character, and he opened doors for ladies. A walking inspiration!

The day we drew this - the first time he sat for us - we were focusing on legs and arms, and I didn't have time to develop his pecs and abdominals. (This is why his ribs/serratus muscles look like a middle schooler drew them.) Plus, his whole head was fascinating so I spent a lot of time on that too. I have a few more drawings of him I will put up soon. (Boo, I should really take a better photo of this one...)

[update] I'm replacing a lot of these with slightly better photos. Now to tackle this timestamp issue...
