The dressing room was quieter as the final performance drew near.

Looking at the mirror, Deta hesitated. This was a decision made long ago, but it had started feeling like.. a lot, over the past few minutes. What were they doing? Toting about on stage in front of an entire audience of people in naught but a swimsuit and a half mask? Maybe this wasn't such a good idea after a-

"You're nervous."

Calypsos voice in their head snapped the line of thought back onto its rails and Deta resumed the task of smoothing their hair into place. "A little bit", they admitted. "It's been a while since I've been this uncovered in public."

Tuck in a strand, couple pulls with the brush, a bobby pin here and there, a spritz of hairspray. Everything seemed more linear and in its own place when you had something to occupy your mind with.

"You know..." Calypso started, "I can't thank you enough for letting me do this, it's been the best time I've.. Ever had, I think. But if you're uncomfortable with going out there we don't have to-"

"Yes, we do." The answer came in a snap. "I won't ruin your appeal by not making an appearance. I just need a minute and I'll be fine."
Finalizing their hairdo, Deta set the butterfly shaped half mask onto their face. It didn't cover almost anything at all.. But it was still a barrier between the layers of the world. It would do. If only for this short while when it felt like the whole world was watching them.

As the two of them stood behind the curtain a final time waiting for the audience to return to their seats, Deta was finally the ones to take initiative on the conversation, gaze fixed to the floor.

"Callie.. I know you're worried about me but I can't ignore the fact that I never asked if YOU wanted to do this. I know I suggested it as part of the choreography but.. Just because the keystone reacts, it doesn't mean the evolution doesn't take a lot out of you. If you'd rather we do this with the regular plan, just say the word. I don't mean to force you into this."

Calypso opened her mouth, then closed it again. What was one to say to this kind of remark? She shifted her weight from one leg to another a few times in thought before finally giving her answer.

"You... Forcing me?" A fond smile crept up onto her face as she counted the little threads in the curtain in front of her. "You, my beloved human who've asked nothing of me, yet given me everything? You who took me out of the center and gave me a family, a home, a purpose, everything I ever wanted? Don't be silly."

Deta couldn't help looking confused as Calypso continued.

"There's nothing in this world you could ask of me that would be too much, Deta. I hope you'll someday come to understand that. But... Thank you. For the consideration. I'll be fine. It's not a long performance."

A moment of silence fell between the two as Deta processed the gravity of the words. Stepping in front of their partner in crime, they made the deliberate effort of extending their hands to hers, weaving their fingers together when the curtain started moving for its final ascent.

"So... Ready for this?"

As the keystone flashed to life and the exhilarating stream of energy whirled to life around them, the look in Calypsos eyes was one of pure adoration.

"I've never been readier."
