Description
OK!Some of you asked for it, and now you are getting it!
Here's Phase 1 of the Taxidermy Wolf Tutorial.
There will be more phases to come (like 5... I think)
But here's the beginning!
.
1.) Find a form you like. As you can see, there are two I personally liked wor a wolf in the rugshell department. One with a longer slender nose, and one that was broader.
2.) Test Fit the Skin over the form by wetting the skin, therefore being able to stretch it. Make sure the eyes meet up with the sockets, nose moulds over the front and both sides of the jaw meet the edges.
2.5) While you work on the form, bag the skin and put it in the refridgerator so it doesn't mold or go bad.
3.) If you are making this into a wearable costume, cut the back panel of the rugshell off. That's a non-anatomical piece only for if the skin is to be rugged.
4.) Next, begin rounding the back.
5.) You are looking for a nice curve to the back of the head so the skin drapes down your back without having a severe edge of a drop off.
6.) Cut out the rugshell's backboard.
7.) Start hollowing out the foam by chipping it out with random tools you have around (a metal spoon will work for this). You want to shape it to the contours of your head. Note: This particular costume wolf will be for sitting atop your head like a hat or helmet. You will NOT see through it's eyes. (That'll ruin the taxidermy part of the realism in the face)
8.) Scuff up the outside shell of the form. This allows for optimum adhesion of the air-dry clay that is to be used.
THIS ENDS PHASE 1 OF THE TUTORIAL.
Stay tuned for PHASE 2!
Disclaimer: I did not hunt this wolf. It came to me already tanned from a fellow taxidermist (who didn't hunt it either). I bought it from him and am building this costume/rug for a friend of mine. This wolf came from Canada (NOT Alaska) and was imported with all Federally Legal paperwork!
Therefore the skin was not from a poached animal. All of my skins are legally obtained from taxidermy facilities or licensed hunters I speak with personally.
SO DON'T LEAVE MEAN COMMENTS!
For God's Sake! Only STUPID people leave comments on things they Hate!
For all you who love learning the art of taxidermy...
ENJOY!
Edit: Just loaded a slightly crisper file. DA still kinda fuzzed it.

You technically don't need to "preserve" them.... But you vcan clean ones that have already fallen out by letting them stew in a bucket of water for a week or two. Then when it's time to rinse them off, soap them up a bit!
They should hold their own, but if not, you can spray them with a clear gloss spray to prevent cracking.

Sweet! I want a wolf pelt so bad but you know...not bad enough to kill a wolf myself XD. Do you ever get like, animals from zoos that have passed away from old age or whatever? I think a few zoos do that, I think.

Every once in a while i'll get a zoo animal. It's not often though.
If you'd like a wolf pelt, I can ask my friend in alaska if he has any from last year he wants to sell. Expect about $400-ish. As high as $800 for a really nice one. He's allowed to get 4 or 5 a year... so it's slim pickins.

Lol! That'd be so cool!
BTW! The leather and axis should be at your place by tomorrow! (If not already)
Well... I can find you a bear suitable for a rug for about $300 ($200 if you don't care if it has 2-4 small bald spots)

yea I got the stuff! The leather is ABSOLUTELY perfect!
And for the bear, I still have that black bear I got from you about a year ago. I was wonderin about the mould to mount the head on n stuff

AWESOME! I'm so glad it will work!
About the bear, I can definately get you a mould of the head. Would you like it to be a rugshell kind of mould with the jawset already installed or a closed-mouth head? Also... I'd need you to take a measurement from the very tip of it's nose, to the tear duct of the eye. (I have access to over 40 bear heads and each one is a different size)

I'm gamme be making a sweet jacket out of it, I'll post a pic of it when I'm done ^_^

4 and 3/8 inches from nose tip to tear duct

Hahaha! I'm gonna make a sweet jacket out of some Wildebeeste!!!!
Ok, I'll look and see if there is a head in the bargain room (cheaper and more cost effective)
Do you want it in shell form like how the wolf tutorial begins? It has the mouth and tongue.
Or I can see about getting you a closed mouth head form that won't have the backboard to cut out.

Id love an open mouth form, I'd need the teech and tongue stuff as well
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Zhon In reply to RegineSkrydon [2008-10-27 12:04:46 +0000 UTC]
Hahha, Ok!
I can definately get you one, Teeth are included, but the tongues are $6.... I can probably snatch you a slightly discoloured one for cheaper.
As for the bear open-mouth rugshell... we didn't have any that small.... sadly... So the shell part will be something like $40-50 I think.... I gotta check it at work. Then they give me a 10% discount, so It's slightly cheaper. Visit jonas-supply.com and see if you find a particular one you like. (prices are posted there too)

Definitely. Unfortunately though, they're going to be made with faux fur because hey, it's larp, and the larper + student + artist combo leaves for one very poor human being. xD
I'll see if I can scan in the costume concepts.

Which is even more talent if you can manipulate fake fur to look real.
I tried several times and was never happy with the fur patterning/colouring/uniform lengths.

It really upsets me that you need to leave disclaimers everywhere almost as long as the rant on how to make the first phase of the wolf just because of stupid people and idiotic comments. Like it's your fault the wolf is dead.
Regardless, this is very well done. It's very detailed and well designed so that everyone can understand what is needed to be done. You seem to be an awesome teacher.

I think you're doing rather well at instructing people via pictures and descriptions. Very good, actually!

This is really nifty You might want to take a bigger picture of those forms in the first step, since those would be REALLY good references for the facial structure of wolves.

Actually, if you type in Mckenzie taxidermy, Jonas supply, or Vandyke's Taxidermy, you can order a catalog for FREE. And when they mail it to your home, it's chok-full of poses, references, anatomy, and lots of cool things!!!!

I gotta say the best one was the Revolution (wildberry, light blue can) Not because it's the name of my car... but because I loved the taste. It actually felt like a Mountain Dew. The Strawberry one was ok, I didn't really care for the Raspberry (dark blue can) one.
Which one won anyway?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Tomboychick In reply to Zhon [2008-10-23 00:43:22 +0000 UTC]
I liked that one the most too. Was it just me or did they all seem to be very light on flavor? I think I was expecting something like the sour one (Pitch Black II?) they had. I would do anything for that to come back.
So many good sodas.. so little of them stay.
I'm not sure which one won. I hope it was the good one. xD

Zhon In reply to Tomboychick [2008-10-23 03:47:20 +0000 UTC]
I missed out on Pitch Black II.... I saw it was grape and never thought to try it.
Like... What happened to Pepsi Blue? That was AMAZING!
People keep telling me that Voltage (dark blue one) Won.
I guess we won't know until it hits the shelves!

Tomboychick In reply to Zhon [2008-10-23 18:55:06 +0000 UTC]
The first one was grape and the second one was grape and sour. I love sour things so it was just beyond awesome for me. Pepsi blue was ok to me. I recreated it for an ex before by using Pepsi and adding some grape soda into it. He said it tasted perfect but I dunno. Try it and get backk to me on it. xD
Voltage? Was that the raspberry one? And yeah, it probably won't come out until everyone forgets about it. Another great soda that died but came back, Livewire Mountain dew (orange). They brought it back but it just isn't the same. Also, you had to have it in a can because there was just something about it being in a bottle I didn't like. I can only find it in that darn bottle and it isn't the same. They seemed to dull it down a lot too.
Wow, this is a lot about soda.. xD

ROFL! Gotta love soda rambles!
Do you remember Surge? There were mixed opinions on that one... I thought it was great! I also heard they stopped making it because a small child had 4-5 in one sitting and went into heart/sugar shock. (It also happened with the Monster Khaos. They seemed to have dulled out that one so nobody would die of the sugar/caffine content) Now I think Coca Cola reinvented 'Surge' under the name of Vault. It kinda tastes the same....
