Description
for valery, because she wanted to know. I managed to dredge up n' convert an old video Kitten pie, usually done with some sort of wild bird is an old tradition going back to medieval England, which also gave us the poem 'Four and Twenty Blackbirds'. This is how it is done:Step 1: You will need to make some pie pastry. It doesn't have to be particularly good pastry as you are not going to eat it. (If you are planning to... ummmn yeeaaah.) You can find many good recipes online, but you should know how to make your own.
Step 2: You will need some kittens, of course. NOTE: it is important that these are *young* kittens, preferably before the eyes open. This is because this trick requires something that is not going to move about. Other suitable candidates are mice, most birds, the quieter rodents (Not rats.) and small lizards.
Step 3: Line the pie dish with pastry, place your kittens in it and quickly cover them with the remaining pastry. Cut the edges off to suit (Personally I like to pinch the edges shut to make it look nice.) Don't forget to make airholes, they do not have to be very large.
Step 4: There are two ways to 'cook' the pie. The traditional way is to Turn the grill up to maximum and place the pie as close to it as your oven will allow until the pastry is browned. This works very well since the air inside the pie acts as an insulator. if you feel mean about putting kittens in an oven you can just use a propane torch to brown it instead. If you are not experienced with doing this, I really suggest you try a few experimental empty pies first.
The result? A pie that looks just like normal until you open it up. If done right, your friends will not believe what you have done. (As I said, this was done with birds, which would fly away when the pie was opened.)
a very memorable dish.

Indeed the trick with this is that the pie is not cooked, it is browned on the outside but is not edible. Have you ever had baked Alaska? happyhomebaking.blogspot.co.nz… It is often 'baked' in the oven to get it nice and brown, but the center has icecream in it.
You can use this trick to make all sorts of interesting treats like icecream pie.

I know I won't get a kitten cause i have a dog who is currently staring at me and has been for 10 minutes. Staring contests to the max. When/If i have kids i will totally make kitten pie to surprise them if they want kittens.

The dog knows. All pies in future will be examined closely for signs of competition.
We had a hellcat and two chihuahuas, they got on ok (As much as hellcat got on with anything.) until she died.

I tried this and added ice cubes and veggies inside the pie along with the kitties. I used the grill method and knew the kittens would be ok because of the ice inside. I made sure to provide nice air holes so everything would work out fine. I guess I left them in too long. The ice cubes had melted quickly and created hot steam that wilted the cabbage and poached the tomatoes along with steaming the tender cats. When I pulled it out I could see the cat soup spilling out of the pan. I had to go with it at this point...I put them back in splashed some butter on the crust and sliced some savory herbs and sharp white cheese to melt on top. I described it to my guests and an ancient delicacy and they were all excited to try it. It was a huge hit! The kittens were perfect because they were only a day or so old. I'm waiting for my cat to have another litter and I will try it again. Thanks for the awesome idea. I saw this kitten pie in 80s movie; "Young Einstein" with the actor Yahoo Serious in the lead role. I knew I would get the chance to try it one day. When Molly had this litter I knew I had to try it.

Not much living is, which is why you must be careful, practice is easy enough, you can use icecream or icecubes to see if you're doing it right. Or you can skip the oven entirely and just brown the pastry with a propane torch. (If the top lifts off you can do this then add the kittens later.)
If you've ever made baked Alaska or tried to cook something that ends up black on the outside but still frozen on the inside you'll know how this works.

Aaah. How very interesting. We have nothing like that at all, but the concept is similar enough.
Pie crust, especially with air under it and/or on grill will brown easily, but will hardly even get warm through. I believe many cookbooks have something to say on cooking things slowly to avoid having charcoal on the outside and snow on the inside. (Especially when discussing cooking things like turkey.)

i've just been reading the amount of comments that keep saying "omg those poor kittens" and i think the truth is, if anyone was actually idiotic enough to do this and actually cook and kill the kittens, they should be shoved in a pie and cooked themselves. i think though if i ever did try this, i'd cook the pastry first coz i'd be to worried about the small possibility of hurting the animals. but i will try this one day. Maybe when i'm a teacher...kids would never eat pie again! XD

You could teach them about four and twenty blackbirds. (People still know that rhyme, right?)
Like most tricks, you do have to be careful, and it does pay to practice. I have a nice recipie for icecream pie based on this. (No, it's not baked alaska.)

The magpie one? I know a few magpie rhymes, it's not 'One for sadness, two for mirth, three for death and four for a birth'? is it? There are a few variations on that one.
Meringue is one of the best insulators out there, it takes ages to even warm up.

mybeginningx In reply to Ziblink [2010-07-05 17:29:18 +0000 UTC]
No, this one goes "one for sorrow, two for joy, three for a girl, four for a boy, five for silver, six for gold, seven for a secret never to be told, eight's a wish, nine's a kiss, and ten's a bird you'll never miss" but i'm sure there are trillions (slight exaggeration?) out there XD
don't think i've heard of Meringue but then again, that's not saying much XD <3

Ziblink In reply to mybeginningx [2010-07-06 05:04:33 +0000 UTC]
Meringue is whipped egg whites, sometimes with sugar. They're soft and fluffy and often used as toppings.
The magpie rhymes have a lot of variations, some nice, some not so nice. It all depends how the bird was viewed in a particular area. (For example, it has been seen as an omen of death, especially when people confuse it with crows and ravens.)

They're both black and birds. (So blackbirds get confused too.) people are often not particularly discerning when it comes to animals, especially if they're city folk.
