Description for valery, because she wanted to know. I managed to dredge up n' convert an old video Kitten pie, usually done with some sort of wild bird is an old tradition going back to medieval England, which also gave us the poem 'Four and Twenty Blackbirds'. This is how it is done:

Step 1: You will need to make some pie pastry. It doesn't have to be particularly good pastry as you are not going to eat it. (If you are planning to... ummmn yeeaaah.) You can find many good recipes online, but you should know how to make your own.

Step 2: You will need some kittens, of course. NOTE: it is important that these are *young* kittens, preferably before the eyes open. This is because this trick requires something that is not going to move about. Other suitable candidates are mice, most birds, the quieter rodents (Not rats.) and small lizards.

Step 3: Line the pie dish with pastry, place your kittens in it and quickly cover them with the remaining pastry. Cut the edges off to suit (Personally I like to pinch the edges shut to make it look nice.) Don't forget to make airholes, they do not have to be very large.

Step 4: There are two ways to 'cook' the pie. The traditional way is to Turn the grill up to maximum and place the pie as close to it as your oven will allow until the pastry is browned. This works very well since the air inside the pie acts as an insulator. if you feel mean about putting kittens in an oven you can just use a propane torch to brown it instead. If you are not experienced with doing this, I really suggest you try a few experimental empty pies first.

The result? A pie that looks just like normal until you open it up. If done right, your friends will not believe what you have done. (As I said, this was done with birds, which would fly away when the pie was opened.)

a very memorable dish.

It does work, it's not that hard to do. There are tricks to it, but it's a simple enough procedure.

If anyone does this and something goes wrong, I will accept responsibility. However given the idiots here that poison cats with antifreeze don't need any encouragement at all, I figure that if someone wants to hurt a cat, they'll find a way, inspiration or not.

Except now you're telling people this is humane when they could easily kill the animals in the process. You fail to recognize the fact that people are, by nature, fucking stupid and will take any small bit of information off of the internet and warp it to their needs, regardless of if they're actually executing it correctly or not.

By putting this up here, you're just enabling this to happen.

If they would actually read the artist comments then you would see that theres no chance of the kittens actually getting "baked". Its only for a minute or two and its just hot enough to brown the pie itself. A simple knowledge of science would tell you that hot air rises so for the short time they are near the heat source, a pocket of colder air will stay trapped underneath

If you really think putting an animal in an oven for any duration of time is acceptable, you're fucking retarded. End of story.

What if the person doing this got worried that the air holes were too small, so they made the air holes bigger and ended up baking the kittens?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ziblink In reply to russianhydra [2009-09-07 01:43:17 +0000 UTC]

That's a good point, however, the holes need to be quite large to bake the kittens for two reasons. First, hot air rises, so a pocket of cold air stays trapped in the pie. Second, the time the pie spend in the oven shouldn't be more than a minute or two, so there should be plenty of air under the id. (If you fear this, you can actually cook the lid and pie seprate, then stick the kittens in and top off with the lid.)

Likewise, this is why I recommend using an oven's grill option, or even a porpane torch. I also suggest practice beforehand.

could you try READING the artist comments first? The kittens are fine and its only hot enough to brown the pie!

Possibly, possibly. But at least I don't actually kill them, and certainly nobody here bothers about that, which is annoying enough.

For a moment I actually thought you cooked the kittens alive. But then I read the steps to doing it.

Cool idea, as long as the kittens don't get hurt.

It is indeed awesome if you can get it to work. When I started I practiced with things like icecubes, to make sure I didn't overheat things. Unbeliveably, pet mice are the best to use, because they like the dark (And the pastry.) and will happily hide for hours in a spacious pie.

Thankies!

It'd be fun to squish four-and-twenty blackbirds into one pie. xDDD

According to history, it was a common trick (Along with cooking peacock and then sticking its colorful feathers back in.) Some pies were said to end up quite large, and I imagine that opening one to release a flock of birds would be quite the dinner entertainment.

On a side note, another dish I like is earth sausages, where you cook sausages in clay, then crack them open to eat. (I'm lucky enough to live near a river full of the stuff.)

I have a nice picture of our third cat, in mom's hands, with its head tilted at an unnatural angle. It's asleep, but I am SO tempted to put it up as a dev with 'I put her out of her misery' on it, and the explanation in small font. But I don't wanna be banned.

It's like making baked alaska, the pie crust keeps the heat out. Have you ever heard the rhyme 'Four and twenty blackbirds (Baked inside a pie)?'

Ever make baked Alaska?

The principle is the same, the pie crust gets browned and looks cooked, but like an underdone cake, it's still cold and mushy on the inside.

I've never eaten one either, this is ornamental.

Cat on the other hand, yes. It is a very interesting taste. About the only traditional meat I know of that tastes anything like it is beef, you can eat that right. (Lol, just kiddin'!) It is like beef i suppose, but much tougher, and with a more... savory taste, like beef jerky I guess, but not so... jerky like.
