Description ...even Spanishian.

There are but two things that amuse me and that is well-placed sarcasm for one and the stupidity of others (and, with a bit of time-healing, my own), so I wanted to capture this little beauty here [link] and share it. For I am generous and not at all attentionseeking like that.

I do hope it is obvious I picked the characters (with the exception of Spain) for their stereotypes, not because I want to make some sort of statement like 'All US Americans are uneducated/ All British people speak like they have an Oxford dictionary imprinted to their brain'.
I neither know what nationality the original author of that monolouge is nor do I care.

"Alfred....as one of your citizens I demand you read a god damn book. I have a lovely suggestion...

*throws a dictonary at his head* Start with the A's and don't stop until you hit the maps. Then keep going. Because your Geography sucks!"

Spain looks like he's in pain. Like 'Romano just punched me in the stomach' level of pain.

Spainican! Lets make Spainishican and Spainican words. And make them mean totally weird things.

Like 'the act of stepping on bugs'. Oh the fun we could have!

I have a feeling for most of England's relationship with America he has been face palming. Got a nice bruise going. I know I face plamed alot watching dubed Alfred.

Oh, my poor, poor country (USA).

I teach. The students speak/write like this all the time. The teacher in me weeps. The tiny piece of me that loves linguistics marvels at this phenomenon.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zieberich In reply to sneakolai [2011-08-21 09:54:55 +0000 UTC]

I don't know, adolecent idiocity creative usage of languages given seems like a rather international phenomenom to me. Poor you that you have to make them get rid of it, though.
Then again, there's nothing wrong with neologisms.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sneakolai In reply to Zieberich [2011-08-21 14:52:19 +0000 UTC]

At least I know to pick my battles. I only try to make them get rid of it in writing formal papers and speeches.

I don't know anything but English and a smattering of Spanish that isn't even conversant, so I'm unaware of adolescent trends in foreign(-to-me) languages, whether grammar, syntax, or vocabulary. For my own curiosity, can you give me an example?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zieberich In reply to sneakolai [2011-10-29 16:05:58 +0000 UTC]

Still sounds like a monumental task.

For one there are many abrevations and an incredible amount of anglicisms used- to a point where it doesn't even make sense anymore. 'n instead of einen (means a or an), swag, style, pretty much every second word of a rap song... and a lot of clothing descriptive words. Bodybag for rucksack, for example, haha.
Same with Turkish and German, so much that I can understand half of the conversation when a fellow with a Turkish migrational background speaks in his mothertounge.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sneakolai In reply to Zieberich [2011-10-29 18:43:39 +0000 UTC]

Iiiinteresting. I was confused by the "'n" for a sec because it's just short form for "and."

My students have "made up a word." Suss. They use it the same way they use "O.D." (overdose), to mean "wow, you went overboard with that; you're overreacting."

I have told them that "suss" is already a word.

Sigh.
