Description So, I haven't played the new God of War yet, but I couldn't resist and watched an all cutscene movie of the game and I loved Kratos' character development and how much he's changed from the rage fueled god killer from the first trilogy to man who is struggling, with both raising his son and also not going back to the person he used to be and I just love how throughout the game he shows wisdom and restraint to Baldur and Atreyus in his words of "We Must Be Better".

In this picture, we see the Kratos of the past surrounded by the flames of rage and the elder Kratos of the present who is as calm yet formidable as the ice magic he wields.

it's kind of hard to see the Aesir as bad guys because of the marvel movies Y'know?

Yeah, but if you look at the original legends, these gods weren't as virtuous as their comic counterparts.

Probably not. There wasn't that many left by the end of GoW3 and Greece was rumored to be destroyed.

Gonna have to disagree with you on that one. From the very first confrontation in the game, Kratos is trying to restrain himself and avoid any conflict but the Norse Gods keep pushing him into it with all the fights he and Atreyus are forced into.

Zigwolf In reply to WerewolfKingC [2018-06-07 08:51:07 +0000 UTC]

Well let's see, the main god of this land, Odin, killed one of his sons (Tyr) for siding with giants, ordered the genocide of all Jotuns, and sent his grandsons to hunt down Kratos and his family. Thor is no saint either, he beat the crap out of his son Modi for fleeing a fight after Thor's other son, Magni, was killed by Kratos. Not much trust can be made with madmen like this.

One thing that me and several other people have noticed about Kratos is that his demigod strength varies throughout the series, from barely holding back a Minotaur to beating down Kronos without breaking a sweat; I then notice that in the newest game when he is using his Spartan Rage, he is at his most strongest, and realized that he holds himself back, both intentionally and unintentionally, because until GOW: Ghost of Sparta, Kratos thought himself as a powerful mortal, but he learned he was a demigod son of Zues, then he let all his rage against the gods loose. He trained himself before the events GOW 4 to focus his anger.

I too noticed that every time he used Spartan Rage, he was holding himself back to a degree. Current Kratos is always holding himself back because he doesn't want to return to the rage filled warrior he was before, he said it himself "We have to be better". You might be right in Kratos' strength being tied to his state of mind. In GoW 1 we see him and his troops losing to the Barbarian King in a flashback, if he was utilizing the power of his demigodhood and had knowledge of it, he would of achieved victory easy.

i heard that sony actually made many references to his real name.

like when he said puny troll is actually a reference when his marvel counter part was thrashed around by hulk.

let me tell you I felt like a freakin idiot when I heard that.

Yeah, there's some clues leading up to it but you'd need a keen eye and mindful ear to get them all when they first show.

Huh, I guess that might be a possible reference.

How do you think old Kratos(Ascension to GOW1) would react if he saw what he would become in the future or met his future self?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zigwolf In reply to Azog220 [2018-05-06 22:46:34 +0000 UTC]

I think it might bring him some sense of peace to know that his path of vengeance ends in the future and after that he even gains a new family and isn't doomed to wander the world alone like he's always been after the death of his wife and daughter.

I'm watching someone play through the game now. It's so bizarre seeing Kratos as calm as he is, and yet it's really incredible. I guess starting a family after all he's been through really helped mellow him out.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zigwolf In reply to TheCopyUniverseTCU [2018-05-03 07:16:11 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it is a strange but welcoming side to this Spartan. It's actually great that Kratos mentions how he needs to stay calm for this journey. "Until our journey is over, one of us must remain focused". You might be right in a way about having a family changing Kratos. His wife Faye is someone he holds in high regard, even claiming she was "better than a god" and he starts to become an even better man during his journey with Atreyus.

I've enjoyed the game immensely!  I think it ranks as one of my favourite video games of all time.

For fun, I looked up who'd win in a fight old Kratos (up until God of War 3), or the new Kratos (from the new game) and a lot said the older Kratos. Personally speaking, I think the new Kratos would win.

But I agree, Kratos' character has developed A LOT sincethe 3rd game.  He's really trying to be a good dad, and if Artreus keeps making him do side quests for people. :/ Who knows, he may even turn into a half decent man

Zigwolf In reply to JasonVoorheesfurry [2018-05-06 17:58:45 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's looking to be that way with everyone.

You might be right about that. I think that younger Kratos has his ferocity and multiple weapons on his side, but older Kratos has experience and won't let his anger control him, also he knows all the moves his younger self had.

I agree, Kratos has come a long way from who he used to be. I feel he'll be and even better man in future games.

JasonVoorheesfurry In reply to Zigwolf [2018-05-06 23:06:03 +0000 UTC]

I imagine, during a time before Atreus was born, when Faye was still alive, with her love of helping people, she'd have Kratos help people.

Like helping someone move a heavy crate up a hill.  He declines but Faye gives him the doe eyes, and he ends up doing it. Silly things really.

^_^ But I look forward to the next game, I think it'll be great, even if the gameplay is exactly the same but the story has simply progressed, I wouldn't give a care as the gameplay was excellent.

Zigwolf In reply to JasonVoorheesfurry [2018-05-10 16:52:30 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure about that assumption. Because of Faye's true nature, she'd had to hide who she really was from everyone. So going out to help people might draw attention to her, and with Odin spying on everyone, she'd get easily seen.

I look forward to the next game as well. especially with the set up that scene gives us when Kratos and Atreyus return home after the main story.

Can you show me where it stated that in the game ? I just never came across that bit of info.

JasonVoorheesfurry In reply to Zigwolf [2018-05-16 11:53:43 +0000 UTC]

It was ... -closes eyes- .... I think he's telling Atreus, Atreus asks him if his mother was a warrior and Kratos said something about her helping people.

I think it's during the first trip to ... uh ... Alfheim?  The Elf world.  They make a few comments about it during the game, mostly when they're in a boat.

He also makes comment of it during the sidequest for Sindri when they can't find the whetstone. Atreus says something about helping people and Kratos comments like: "Just like his mother"
