Description More practicing with brush pens. The brand I'm currently using is the Prismacolor Premier and I really love it. It's smooth, allows a degree of control that's a little easier for a shakey-handed person like myself, and can deliver both thick and extremely fine lines.

I threw this guy together just for fun so I could practice my linework, and I actually splashed some really outrageously bright colors onto it in Sai, but I ended up swapping it out for sepia tones because it just looks more organic. It also distracts less from the linework and serves to enhance rather than confuse it.

ANYWAYS... um... I've decided that this is a Snagglewumpus. I don't know what that is, but he LOOKS like such a thing, so there you go.

Not this time, it's all traditional brush pen, baby! I mostly use digital these days due to cost/ease, but seriously NOTHING feels quite like traditional tools.

Aaaah, you use brush pen so well!
I bought some after looking at your awesome works done with brush pens, but all what I do with them is all messy! xD

Oh man, that's ALL I got when I started, too! It takes a LOT of practice but trust me, you'll get it. It took me many, many experiments and a lot of failed attempts! Keep at it! I'm still not good enough to do commissions with it, I don't think!

However, I've never tried my hand at brush pens (very seriously anyways). They're hard >XD

Amazing looking inks! I used a brush pen once and enjoyed it, but I've never stayed long with any traditional media - I'm a slave to digital in the end.

But, for a brief time there I had a lot of luck with a manga pen I bought on reccomendation from an amazing manga artist. No digital inks have the same look, so I probably should use it more often...

Aaaanyway, I love the ink here, and the creature itself is adorable and I want one.

I still love traditional media, even though I'm primarily digital as well. There's just something about physically holding REAL STUFF that's just... more organic and smooth and comfortable. Digital's just a lot more varied and easier (for me), but it never feels quite the same. I generally like to use a combination of both.

Yeah, I definitely sketch better on paper. But inking and everything else is all digital for me. x3

I still ink traditionally, though lately I've been trying to learn it on Sai since it lends a different look. Or sometimes I ink in Illustrator.

Very tasty delicious line weights here. :d And I'm totally digging the stripey horns and tongue on this guy! It's a really fun design, and the sepia shades leave me imagining all kinds of fun color combinations. I've always loved how you draw muzzles and claws, so this guy is seriously easy to love. <3 I enjoyed taking a little sneaky-peak at your faint construction lines, too. Watching your process would be totally entrancing to me. I'm a bit of a silly fangirl of your art, and this is my first time ever commenting on ANYTHING.
Keep up the good work! :]

The Snagglewumpus is a highly endangered and majestic creature that can only be found in three blocks of downtown New York. This beautiful beast survives by tricking tourists out of their money in illegal street games of three-card monte, which it will use to buy the food it desires more than anything in the world-quadruple stuffed bean and cheese burritos.

Did you use the double-ended marker or one of the illustration markers? (I'm trying to look them up on the net and I found this page: [link] )

I think it's an illustration marker. It's more pen-ish, definitely not one of the fat double-end types.

Sai is pretty awesome, I'm loving it! It's so much more organic than Photoshop; people were right about that. It's nowhere near as powerful though, and a lot of stuff I still end up doing in Pshop.

Nyaasu In reply to zillabean [2012-03-27 13:36:50 +0000 UTC]

That is exactly how I feel about OpenCanvas. I want to ditch Photoshop for it, but there's so much it can't handle as well.

Inking with it though, is amazing. Worth every single penny.
