Although in my opinion. As it works well here. Staring at it for a while, it feels like the nose looses its shape toward the upper left.

It does but I found that drawing either a shadow or a highlight there just ended up looking like a line which I was trying to avoid

i think you're doing fine really, you can add little speculars on the rims of the muzzle on the mouth (if your character has a muzzle) try to analyze the planar structures of faces by doing studies from photos. also try adding a little more light in the mid tones of the eyes, that should bump it out more
