Malone looked round to his tail as his daydreaming was sharply interrupted by a firm tug on is tail. He pulled the appendage closer to try and get whatever it was to let go, but the intrusion seemed to follow. Now hanging by her jaws, Malone quickly realized that the problem was a cub.

He remembered now... one of the many new faces in the camp.

He was still healing from his wounds of his hunting challenge and the landslide, feeling rough and spaced out, but he was with it enough to realise quite how flustered and apologetic the little cub was as she flailed around silently in an attempt to explain something she, for some reason, couldn't tell him before flopping onto his paws in a sad heap.

He frowned a little before he rested his tail over her back and scoffed weakly.

"If you're trying to attack me, you're doing it in the wrong place. My fur's too thick on my tail. Want me to show you how...?"

The cub's eyes lit up and she slowly stood, seeming glad he wasn't angry at her.

He couldn't really help himself. She looked so miserable...

Jeez.

Together they spent the rest of the afternoon goofing around, Malone teaching her the different kinds of defences for different cats, and the cub, whom he didn't learn the name of until much later when her parents came to find her, Witch Hazel, drank it all up.

He went to bed feeling far more rested that night.
