Description
For the June Artisan Craft "nightmare" challenge ([link] ). Alternate angle here: [link]Here's a friendly xenomorph from Ridley Scott's Alien movies.
Although layered all-white papercuts can be fantastic ([link] and [link] ), they have the luxury of shadows. I was nervous about making a layered all-black piece, as I wasn't sure if the depth (or details for that matter) would read. But it works! The challenge is to find appropriate lighting. I'll post another photo soon, once I have some sunlight to work with.

Agreed! Fantastic! Great layout and well executed. I've been meaning to try a sculpture in a different single color other than white, but haven't yet.
I've been playing with lighting as well. I find afternoon sun (like 3-4p.m.) to be really good. I've also been using three lights (one on either side and one above) to light my pieces. It takes some tweaking, but I like the results I'm getting.

Thanks for the lighting tips! I need to keep experimenting; I can't seem to find the perfect lighting/camera settings, but in time perhaps..

~Zippybluedwarf! This is fantastic! This is the same idea I just did but with buildings and their architecture for a design. I love seeing the technique in an organic (?) creature. Ha!

Thanks! I'm always amazed by how neat layers of a single color look! I never think it will work, but it really adds a fascinating element of depth. Cool!
