Description
1. Material used2 brushes: size 3 & 14
Watercolourset from brand Pelican
Masking Fluid
Watercolour paper from brand Hahnemühle
pencil
2. Pencil Drawing
I try to keep this drawing as simple as possible, since the pencil can shine through the watercolour. Therefore I erase any lines, that aren't absolutely nessasary.
It is very important, that the proportions are correct in this step, since it is almost impossible to correct them later.
3. Masking Fluid
This blue fluid can be distributed across the paper, everywhere you whish to leave the paper white.
These areas will later serve as light reflects.
I also used the masking fluid for the background to create some abstract forms, which in my opinion give the background a nice texture.
It is very important to let the masking fluid dry fully before continuing with the next step, because otherwise it is distributed all across the paper.
4. Background
Once the masking fluid is completely dry, it is possible to paint right over it, without painting on the paper below.
In this step I painted the background, using green and blue. I like my backgrounds appearing very dynamic, so I let the colours flow into each other on wet paper.
While I did so, the part of the paper, where the ocelot is drawn was still dry. This is important, because otherwise the green and blue will flow into the cat's body.
When the background had dried, I gave the ocelot a grounding.
5. Shadows and contrasts
I waited with this step until the paper was mainly dry, because otherwise the black flows into the colours of the background, which wasn't intended.
I aslo intensified the colours which I used in step 4, to paint the grounding of the cat.
6. Removing the masking fluid
It is very important to wait with this step, until the paint is completely dry to avoid smeering of the colours.
Then the blue masking fluid can be rubbed of carefully with a finger. The paper below is completely white.
If anything is white, that shouldn't be, then of course, it is possible, to correct this now.
