zk-vkei — Who hates side views?

Description ***Another tip, since I was running out of room, lol- Don't draw the ear before you've drawn the rest of the face and head. It's almost guaranteed to end up in the wrong spot. And trust me, the ear in the wrong place might seem subtle but it looks really odd! -The ear should start where the eye ends and end where the lips start.

(Seriously, you'll be staring at it going... "Why the hell doesn't this look right!")

So... I dun know about anyone else... but I f'ing HATE side views. They have always been the most difficult facial position to draw for me, and you see tons of facial tutorials around but none that focus on this evil, known as "the profile" lol.

so here are some things that have helped me draw them better.
It's still an area I have issues with, so this is not by any means perfectly done.

Hope my brush stroke writing isn't too difficult to read. I tried to make it as neat as possible. ^^" I have horrible hand writing/printing. I know.

Awesome! Great help!

You wouldn't happen to have any advice on transfering proportions from a head in say a front or 3/4 view and finding out how to use those to create an accurate profile view? That would be uber helpful. ^_^

Umn. I'm not sure. It depends on what you mean by transferring proportions. I generally just go by eye when it comes to drawing multiple views.

But I'm glad you found this helpful ^^

I kind of got it down now, but what I meant was making the proportions of a head's side view be the same as it's 3/4 and front views. ^_^

ah. Yeah it can be tricky. I find it helps to find relationships with things like... if this piece of hair ends here then the lips start just a bit below it, for example (obviously it would depend on the character design). Character consistency takes some practicing, that's for sure.

That's actually what I started doing and it helps out a LOT! Thanks for confirming it! ^_^

Yeah, this is my first time actually trying to draw a character consistently multiple times (it's a Head Reference Sheet). It's hard, but I'm already starting to get familiar with parts of his character! XD

OH god I've been wondering what I've been doing wrong when drawing this for years! Anywho, I've got a question concerning the whole ear not ending at the head part. I have characters that tend to have large pointy elf-like ears. With that applied do I draw the head first then the ears? Or just do human ears first then adjust it afterwards?

That would depend on the type of elven ears and what you personally find easier. I find I do roughly/lightly draw where the human ears would be and then use that as a guide for positioning and then turn them into elven ears.
