Description Crossover Asterix / The Hobbit

Exactly what's said in the title.

I finally saw the Hobbit recently and I just loved, it was even better than I expected and...

Ok, ok, I'll stop right now and I'll explain this instead.

I had the idea of this weird crossover right after seeing the movie because Bombur strongly reminded me of Obelix. Let's see, both are fat (er, I mean they're not fat, no, just... well wrapped), really big eaters, red-headed, have a moustache (albeit a very long braided one in Bombur's case) and even braids. Come on, I can't be the only one who thought of this, right ?

Moreover, I think the dwarfs from the movie would get along quite well with the Gauls from the comic: both groups are brave, love to fight and eat, value friendship and loyalty very highly and are cheerful and likeable despite having quite rude manners, especially at table. As for the Gauls, they would just love Middle Earth, especially the dwarfs, and probably the hobbits too, most likely the Took I guess. As for Obelix, there's a lot of “Romans” to fight who are really different from those they have at home: orcs and goblins (seriously, he thought Indians were just “strange Romans” in Asterix and the Great Crossing, so he would definitely think the same of the orcs). I think that it would be the first time someone would be happy to see these creatures and run towards them.

Anyway, that's how I got the idea for that rough sketch where you can see Obelix as Bombur eating a wild boar and Asterix as Bofur with a smoking pipe. I choose to represent Asterix as this dwarf because he's the closest to Bombur, apparently the smart one from what we've seen so far and he has a cool hat just like Asterix has a cool helmet. I did the drawing without any reference and rather quickly so there must be some mistakes, plus adapting the clothes and hairstyle of The Hobbit in Asterix's style ain't easy, and, worst of all, I'm not happy with their hands and feet, the parts of human anatomy I have the most difficulty to draw without references, so I'll try to correct it if I do a clean version of this.

Disclaimer: The Hobbit belongs to JRR Tolkien and Peter Jackson for the movie, Asterix and Obelix belong to Goscinny and Uderzo and of course I'm not paid for this.

Funny to see we thought the same!
Well from what I know France, Poland (an artist from Poland made a fanart of Bombur and Obélix, the name is Momofukuu) and the U.S. at least.

(Thanks for the fav btw).

 Before I leave off nattering:-

Mr Brendan Gleeson as Obelix + Mr James Nesbitt as Asterix = GOOD TIMES! (Get to work on that movie Hollywood).

That does sound good and they would just have to recycle the make-up of Bombur (after modidying the hair of course). But four movies have already been made out of the comics and if you ask me only one of them is worth watching: Asterix mission Cleopatra (the closest to the humor we have in the comics and the one that was the most successful by far with both the audience and the critics, though I don't know how it was received out of France), the two last ones in particular are just awful :/.

I was actually thinking of an Animated feature - I think the books would work beautifully adapted to such a format!

They do work beautifully in animation (given how energic the drawings are that's no surprise ) and there's been many animated features already (the best ones for me are the Twelve Tasks, Asterix and Cleopatra and Asterix in Britain) and there's a new one that comes out next week, The Mansions of the Gods, the first Asterix made in 3D,  that looks very promising from the trailer. There's even a reference to Lord of the Rings, Gandalf's most famous phrase more precisely (guess who stands for Gandalf?) that you can see here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6y63J…

Maybe for another future adaptation (with a Hobbit reference that time ^^) or the english dub of the new one ?

I'm afraid that I love this illustration so much that I now want to see an entire edition of The Hobbit illustrated in the style of Asterix and Obelix - I don't suppose that you have a LOT of spare time on your hands Good Zoccu?

I'm glad you liked it that much (thank you for the fav btw ^^) but you're right, I'm afraid I don't have that much spare time. Moreover, making the entire Hobbit in the style of Asterix, as awesome as it sounds, would be way too difficult, but I'm working on some more crossovers ideas between the two worlds (by working I mean crude sketches and notes about what I could have the characters do). But I've already produced something: three fanfics based on the three songs from "Asterix and Cleopatra" but adapted for the Hobbit that I've posted here (I might make them into a comic some day but it would take long). The problem is that I've written them in French but I could still try to translate it.

Great to see you liked it that much (thanks for the fav btw ^^).

Well, they "almost" look like they do in the comics because I didn't have the comics anywhere near me when I drew that.

Ellosse In reply to zoccu [2014-11-16 13:11:55 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome! Well, I meant 'almost' because of Bofur's hat, and the Dwarven accessories, etc. But I think that they still looked very good.

Yes, the dwarven accessories were quite difficult to adapt, especially since I drew it pretty much immediately after coming coming back from theater.

Nice dialogue , especially for the detailled list of ingredients.

Imagine how short LOTR, or The Hobbit for that matter, would have been if they had possessed some magic potion.

Thanks for the comment and the watch by the way ^^.

Yes, the only ones we've heard about in the comic, where we also learn that if you can't make magic potion you can make tea instead and pretend it is. It had an incredibly strong placebo effect on the British after all ! Though, this trick wouldn't work in Middle-Earth since they have tea...

zoccu In reply to Pikku-Piru [2013-01-27 17:46:00 +0000 UTC]
