just got back from two back to back exams so i can breathe easy for another week or so. anyways, time to practice drawing! i really need to practice backgrounds/enviros, so i've decided that all art from now on thats not a reference needs to have some sort of non static bg. i might try and chronicle lafayette's as shown here.

here's my Cold War spy magician characters doing some actual cold war spy stuff: aka murdering people in hotel rooms. this is during the time period when nid is still a magician and had just been recruited into lafayette's command, which is probably around 1955. he's still a bit of a newbie learning the ropes and also trying to emotionally acclimatize himself to a horrifying field, hence the slight 'oh god' facial expression. lafayette's just chillin because, well, she's lafayette.

they probably didn't kill this guy with magic as evidenced by the blood on them. sometimes magicians have to do stuff the old-fashioned way to escape detection or avoid arousing suspicion, especially in cities with so-called 'demon nets,'--lattices of water pipes that can be used to triangulate magical activity. they may have wanted to pin the blame for the murder on a local human gang or insurgency.

i tried some different stuff (mostly filters + liberal use of the erase tool) and i really like how this turned out as a complete scene. i'll probably use this technique to do more environments and possibly short comics?

also in retrospect i realized that they look like they're going 'SHIT why did we kill this guy he had cute abs'
