Shardken (Shardy) was the first fan character I ever made, and she stems from the Invader Zim fandom. I made her in early 7th grade and have stuck with her ever since, and I’m still an active member in IZ. It was about time I updated her reference, since my style of drawing has significantly changed over time.

Some basic info: Shardy stands at 6 feet and weighs 145 pounds. Most of this is muscle weight, making her very skinny. She only has two fingers on each hand, but like the tallests' fingers, they are very flexible and can imitate the functions of thumbs. Because Shardy does look rather intimidating, her actual strength is often overestimated. Her speed and close combat capabilities, on the other hand, should never be taken lightly. Because Shardken is blind, she relies strictly on sound, smell, and echolocation to find her way around. Her senses are heightened but still maintains the weakness of not being able to recognize color, read, or view a computer screen/monitor of any kind.

Personality-wise, Shardy is snooty, sarcastic, sassy, mischievous, and usually moody. While she isn’t an outright mean person, Shardken is a ruthless bitch to anyone who tries to push her around. Overall, she’s not the kind of person anyone particularly likes. (There are very few exceptions to this.) Because of this, Shardy has virtually no friends and usually has to stay in solitude.

Her standpoint with the Irken Empire is neutrality.

Backstory summary:

Shardken is, by technicality, not Irken; it is the unquestioned truth that Irkens can not breed, fall in love, or carry any instinctive urges whatsoever. If they can, that is a phenomenon of a host Irken system: Someone of another species eerily similar to Irkens is feeding off the power and resources of Irkens for their own personal survival.

This is a phenomenon of evolution and the interruption thereof by Irken technology; Irkens evolved by pre-space versions of Irkens genetically modifying themselves to carry on "superior" characteristics... but in doing so, the genetic modification went out of hand, and now Irkens are so warped by the tampering of nature that they are no longer able to sustain life without machinery. Thus, the ancestors went extinct and all became Irkens...

Supposedly some of these "primitive" survivors outsmarted their descendants and managed to weasel their way into the empire, allowing themselves to become modified and take on the appearance of an Irken without actually being Irken. Through this, they mooch off the Irken system and allow their hosts to take their non-Irken genes and clone them, generating more pseudo-Irkens in the process. This has kept them alive for millions of years, in plain sight but completely hidden from the empire.

Over time, the pseudo-Irkens forgot entirely about their differences from legitimate Irkens, became engrossed with Irken culture, and eventually became thoroughly convinced that they were Irkens themselves. With that being said, both species, extremely similar in appearance and mindset, make up the entire Irken empire.

Because Irkens do not breed, they felt no need to modify genes so that the genetic modifications may be passed to offspring. This undoubtedly means that... theoretically... if two pseudo-Irkens were to breed, it would result in a pure-blood prehistoric Irken with no evidence of genetic modification whatsoever. But with every member of the Irken empire thinking that they can't breed even if they tried, it eliminates any possibility of a prehistoric Irken... right?

Keep in mind, however, that Shardken is NOT... repeat... NOT... naturally that color. The purple skin is a result of unethical smeet experimentation done by the Irken Empire. It was an experiment to test the effects of the exposure of Irkens to different elements of nature such as water, sunlight, oxygen, and various other elements. This was due to the elite soldiers and invaders being picked off too easily by massively catastrophic calamities such as acid rain and killer death bees.

Dumbasses. FU This is why GMOs are bad.

One phenomenon was ultraviolet radiation, resulting from strong rays of sunlight reaching the planet's surface in less-than-desirably thin atmospheres; they supposedly had a very dangerous chemical reaction with Irken skin that didn't affect native creatures. If not properly protected with sunscreen, the skin will result in a painful chemical reaction that severely and permanently discolors the skin.

What greater way to test the properties of ultraviolet radiation than picking smeets and burning them to death to see what color they turn, then cut them open and see how the organs were affected?

Bad news, guys: you technically didn't pick an Irken to experiment on.

Shardken at roughly age 5 was shot with a powerful beam of radiation, charring her skin and permanently disfiguring her. She went blind when her eyelids were scorched and fell off in charred flakes; her eyeballs were then cooked from the inside out. The purple and lilac spots you see in her eyes are the dead collections of nerve cells and capillaries that fried. In the experiment the heat was so intense that her clothes caught fire and deteriorated, resulting in a full 2nd-3rd degree burn.

Luckily some vortian spies were there just in time to murder the lab assistants, tamper with the lab machinery, and throw the experiment... saving Shardy from certain death out of pity. Even so, Shardy was left blind and blackened with dead skin, unable to move or eat and stuck in a vort hospital for many long months. She was definitely not expected to make it out alive; when she did, however, her dead skin flaked off to reveal its new purple color. Her eyes, however, ended up being far beyond repair.

As Shardken grew older, she used her heightened senses (compensation for blindness) to find her way around. Eventually she discovered echolocation, which involves high-pitched frequencies that bounce off nearby objects to give her a sense of the environment. This, combined with her natural "animal" ferocity, served Shardken well in military training and went on to become a spy for the Vortians and other Anti-Irken empires and alliances. However, Shardken feels no resentment towards the Irkens, seeing them as "misguided and increasingly idiotic" with their continued dependence on technology.

But pseudo-Irkens aren't Irkens, are they? She finds some, all right, and when she does, her entire perspective on the Irken empire, Irkens, and her own existence go entirely out of whack...
