Description I had a vision of this image in my mind for a long time. It's from a story that I am working on right now. I am a big fan of any architecture that is associated with bodies of water. I started to look at a lot of Italian architecture to do this matte concept.
I also entered a contest on this subject which was hosted by Bobby Chiu(Alice in wonderland concept artist) and judged by Dylan Cole(Avatar concept art director). Due to lack of time, it had a lot of flaws but I still managed to win it.. After that, I worked on it for a day to finish it off.

It was 100% completed in Photoshop with no use of 3D.it has completed in a time period of 3 days. My thanks to Dylan Cole and Bobby Chiu for the contest.(Photoshop.3010 pixels wide)

cheers

This is one of the much better mattes I've seen in a long while that didn't blatantly feel like nothing but stitched photo elements. I feel a lot of depth in the vision to this image, it feels almost like a piece of fine art, never mind conceptual.

The one spot in particular I enjoy are the towers on the very top of that mountain in the distance. We can feel their close proximity to that cloud just overhead -- that cloud, and it's shadow cast across its peak is just done so absolutely well. Drives the feeling of scale here right home.

There is only ONE thing picking my brain visually about the piece: and that is the volumetric light rays extending from the building to the left. Light rays don't work this way. You got them reversed here in comparison to the rest of the atmosphere. Judging by the position of the sun to the far left of the image, we should see a light gradient casting from the left of the image and gradually terminating to about as far as your current light ways do. This gradient gives the feeling of the sun casting through warm, potentially humid air. In the area where you created those light rays, the gradient should cease and become completely transparent at all areas beneath that angle (save maybe a soft falloff.) With all areas up from there brighter with a gradient, that would provide us with the feeling of a shadow cast through the air from those buildings. Currently, we're seeing the opposite, where the area in shadow is seemingly brighter as through there are large mirrors reflecting light from the rooftops. Without the atmosphere itself getting brighter, we have no reference for a shadow. (The gradient through the air doesn't have to be extreme either -- even half the opacity of the current light rays can go a far, far way.)

Keep it up, man!
(I hope my explanation made sense -- I don't typically re-read my comments. XD)

I have to say, this is marvelous, the picture is wonderful.
The picture captures a beautiful city with detail buildings, and a great scenary of outside the city land. This gives my mind a very soothing and happy mood as the people in the painting looking peaceful, i would love to live in a city like this one day, or at least visit one that is similar. The details of the wwater look life like to reality and the architecture of the buildings looks very promising to me. You did a fantastic job with this, and i'm very pleased with it.

Marvellous. The use of colors and shading is ecellent. The detail is spectacular and the total impact really grabs the viewer's attention. I always like images that include great detail and contrasts in the background, something a lot of artists don't do. Instead of hazy brush stokes and blob-like figures, there is photo-like clarity to the very back of the image.
