Actually, I've never been taught how to draw, especially the shadows. That truly came from trial and error and painstaking patience. Not sure of a tutorial out there for it, but I can give you some tips:
- use shadow for the outline, lightly. objects in real life are not outlined by a black line. You can then darken as needed.
-I used blending sticks to do a lot of the shadowing. you go up and down in gradation with the graphite but blend it all together with the sticks. They are mainly just rolled pieces of paper with points and you can get them at almost any art store. You can also use things such as paper towels, different toothed paper, etc. Just go crazy.
The best advise I have is to practice. I know it sounds cliche' but I have never had a class or book or anything to draw(not that they wouldn't have been helpful ).... just been practicing since I was 6.
