Early Access build is the BOMB! It's just as challenging as the original Shantae on Game Boy! I did notice though.....she has MANY more dances than I thought she'd have. She's even got her own Mystic Arte-style dance.

Oh look, it's the half genie that kills dogs, turns people to stone and gives deadpan reactions as if she doesn't give a crap, rots her friend's eggs, and rubs salt in the wound by bringing her friend snake eggs out of complete stupidity. All created by a man with a surprisingly dark and disgusting sense of humor who also lacks the ability to tell a decent narrative. Bravo Shantae... Bravo. I just lost a lot of respect for you. Ugh... I wish I wasn't so conflicted.

A very similar argument could be made for Mega Man, Mario, Sonic, Kirby......Shantae's far from perfect, but it's not that bad. It's nowhere NEAR as bad as Sonic No Sex.Β

No, I was unable to back the game when it first kickstarted, which haunts me because I know that other backers got their art and faces in the game, which I'd do anything for.

But, I have extreme doubts that I will be surprised. If anything, I'll just be shocked and repulsed by something that happens in the game that I will most likely despise.

Rebelno6 In reply to XXFanXofX4869XX [2016-12-05 03:12:32 +0000 UTC]

I... I thought they were a bit more serious than what pirate's curse was... I only played Risky's Revenge as my first game and the first Shantae just felt like an experiment and to be fair, I'm not too big on the first game as I never really finished it. Then I played Pirate's Curse and wow, it jumped the shark.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

XXFanXofX4869XX In reply to Rebelno6 [2016-12-05 03:48:31 +0000 UTC]

Serious?? Wow, I never thought of them as serious when I first saw them. If anything, the humor reminded me of Sonic and Mega Man.Β

Well, to each their own I suppose. Huh....I always figured seriousness was best left to games like Metal Gear, Devil May Cry, the Tales series and the Final Fantasy series. Games that are more toony like Mario, Sonic, Shantae, Kirby, Zelda....there's not always a need for serious.Β

Rebelno6 In reply to XXFanXofX4869XX [2016-12-05 13:18:30 +0000 UTC]

Well, I don't know what it was about Pirate's Curse, but the humor and even some of the plot was just frustrating to sit through. Even some of the character spotlight videos... Those weren't funny, those were stupid, especially the one with Sky. It didn't help that by the end of it, I was appalled that Shantae was moronic enough to bring her snake eggs when she's a BIRD trainer! I mean, there's being naΓ―ve, and then there's being idiotic. Of course, you wouldn't understand. Nobody ever does! All those problems that I listed about Shantae above, I have never EVER seen a character fuck up or act the way she did, not Kirby, not Mario, not even Link. And if the next game is going to be like that, why waste my money?! Now that I know the company's true nature, I'm not giving Matt Bozon another chance unless you are right, but once again, I have my doubts. And I've played other games that they have made. The Mighty Switch Force games were just okay, and Double Dragon Neon was the first game I ever played where the voice acting legitimately annoyed me. The only thing I can say about the Shantae games that is absolutely perfect is the visuals. That's it!

XXFanXofX4869XX In reply to Rebelno6 [2016-12-05 20:44:27 +0000 UTC]

Uhm......I learned long ago not to apply any kind of realistic logic to games. I understand what you're saying - and I admit that I've cringed more than once at Pirate's Curse, especially the desert portion when Shantae was mistaken for a princess - but I loved the gameplay and art enough to overlook the story.Β

As for seeing those characters never fuck up...I've played the Mario RPG series, and I've seen Mario make similar mistakes. Not EXACTLY similar, but pretty stupid nonetheless. Kirby's innocent enough that you can trick him into doing virtually anything (Marx and Magolo are proof) and Link deals with too many weird things to make me care.Β

But what I still don't understand is why you thought Shantae had serious tones. What exactly gave you that idea?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Rebelno6 In reply to XXFanXofX4869XX [2016-12-06 01:13:58 +0000 UTC]

Okay, let me put it in a different kind of way since very few people understand what I mean by this. I don't blame them for not understanding, that's why I hate myself anyway. When I said it was serious I meant that it wasn't trying too hard to make the players laugh, but to try and create a bizarre but coherent world that had more variety and interesting characters in it that I had yet to learn about. Risky's Revenge's ending made me think that things were going to get a bit darker. They sort of did, but not quite like I had hoped. But, Pirate's Curse jumped the shark. It took too many risks with the humor, they did more with Shantae's personality than they needed to to the point where she actually sounded very annoying and too childish. I mean, dear god, who's the moron who thought it was a good idea to have that old guy that you accidentally turned to stone. I know that he changes back at the end, but dear lord, I have never seen a joke that has internally shocked and scarred me to this much of a psychological degree. And Shantae's response was absolutely dreadful. And then there's Risky. People compare her to Eggman or Bowser, but she feels worse than both of them and people that do compare her to those two offend me because she is a villain I have nothing but hate for. She's nasty, she doesn't take any responsibility for her actions, she has luck that's usually reserved for the good guys, she has this shit eating grin on her face, and then there's the things that she did like steal Shantae's magic, make her destroy it, and whether you want to admit it or not, the Pirate Master came back because of her and I don't appreciate the kindness that Shantae showed to her. The Squid Baron and Hypno Baron were more deserving of mercy than she was. Do you have any idea how separated I feel from the fan base because of this? Do you have any idea how much respect I lost for Shantae for just this one fucking game. I'm not kidding when I say that I want Risky Boots to suffer more than anything and be suppressed for all eternity. That Pirate took so much away from me psychologically and no matter how hard I try, I can't control it, I just can't. There's no use playing the games anymore if I have nobody to relate to in the game... Unless WayForward decides to make games starring Sky, she's the only one I can kind of relate to and like. I don't care if she's playable in Half Genie Hero, that doesn't mean I want to go through anything else just to get to her and that alone won't sell me the game... Odds are that you aren't going to take me seriously, nobody ever does. Everyone thinks I'm weird. I know, and I despise myself. You aren't even agreeing with me on anything. You can't see things they way I do, you don't believe me... Don't get me wrong, that frustrates me so much... But, it unfortunately is not you're fault. So, I have nobody to get mad at but myself... Besides, what makes you think that I'll enjoy the early access build of Half Genie Hero? What makes you think I won't be disappointed? I don't want to talk about the good things about Shantae or WayForward, I want to talk about the bad. I know it's there, I know it. It has to be realized, it has to.

Wow. Was not expecting a rant.Β

And you assume too much. If you think no one takes you seriously, then you're setting yourself up to make it happen.Β

I do take you seriously. But as someone who grew up with that sort of humor and that sort of style of story, I can hardly agree with certain points. What's ironic about your critique is that many game reviewers - like IGN - make the same if not similar points you did.Β

Risky is more rotten than Rottytops, that's for damn sure. But I have to agree with Shantae - she had just as much potential for good as Eggman and Bowser. And while I hate those two bastards to the end of the earth and back, they've done their fair share of justice too. (And that's a word I do not use often.)

But so long as you just focus on the bad stuff, you'll never truly enjoy anything life has to offer. I learned that ten years ago with Sonic 06, and was harshly reminded again in 2014 with several deaths in my family. Focus on the bad and you see nothing but bad. Focus on the good and you see nothing but good. Look at life on both sides of the fence, and you'll find the things that are really enjoyable.Β

That said, there's nothing I can do to fix the problems Shantae has. But hate breeds hate, which in turn breeds error in judgment. Take a breather, leave the series alone, and come back to it when you think you're ready. That's what I did with Sonic. Hell, that's what I did with my own life.Β

You hate Bowser and Eggman, yet you don't hate Risky Boots? Well, there's something I will never understand. And you think that it's so easy? Now, that's just insulting! Giving Risky Boots a chance is blasphemous. I'd sooner rip apart that bitch and then Shantae along with her just for thinking that!

I never said I didn't hate Risky. You're jumping to conclusions again. Slow down and think. Nor did I say it was easy. It's NEVER easy.Β

If I thought it were easy, I would have committed suicide before 2014 even ended. And I'm not joking about that.Β

Yes. From that point forward, I've done my best to keep bright about things, but with a grain of salt to keep me grounded. Even now I still thank my best friends for introducing me to Markiplier and Jacksepticeye, the latter of whom I got to speak with over Omegle. Between my friends and the advice Sean had, I've stayed well above water.Β

But between my dad suffering a stroke, my grandmother nearly dying from nursing home abuse, and my favorite pet cat suffering a simultaneous stroke and heart attack, all within three months....life was hell. And I still wish 2014 never happened.Β

No it's not. No amount of words could ever describe it perfectly. But regardless, I had to keep moving. I had to try and stay afloat. And I nearly forgot the lessons I learned from Tales of Symphonia and Dr. King....

Ah. Erm...yeah, that probably sounds a bit weird. But whenever I think of Dr. King, I think of Tales of Symphonia and vice versa. Bit of a long story....and we're already off-track.Β

Back to what I was saying before, you have to find ways to focus on the positives in games. For me, it helped to make my own little headcanon about Shantae. Since her personality reminded me of one of my favorite anime characters, I gave her a little backstory about Mimic being her real uncle, and how he rubbed off on her. (They DO act alike on more than one occasion...)

Corny as this may sound, find your happy place. Talk to your friends (And if they're amiable, your family.) Experiment and find what makes you comfortable. Those little silver linings will help keep you anchored. And if nothing else works, see about talking to a psychologist. I did in middle school, and it helped.Β

Don't sweat it. Your gripes with Shantae are reasonable, but they're not the end of the world. Nor should you let them be. And I can tell you have other problems to deal with - trust me, everyone's been in that boat for a period of time at some point in their lives.
