Hrmmm... I have had problems with the render cow system too... it's not a perfect solution, what I can suggest you do, if you're rendering out say, 100 frames, lets say you have 4 computers... try installing the software on each computer and then render 1-25 on PC1, 26-50 on PC2 etc...

Try that, other than that I can't be sure why

Yeah, there's not really that much going on in NZ in the entertainment industry; you're either working for Weta or you're nothing I guess. I hope to either move to the UK/Aus sometime to further myself there, just lately I've not had the time with all of this coursework :\

Yeah, Weta is about it when it comes to NZ and even then, Weta is over in LA as well! LA is seriously the best place for CG animation, it's the heart of animation in my opinion. I'm heading over there in July for SIGGRAPH will be meeting with the Lighting technical director from Weta while i'm over there
