first i have to say your work is just simply beautiful. It's a shame that comments are disabled on your works, when they are so captivating!!

I adore your art and passion for true traditional artwork.
Any tips for drawing? I'm awful at shading, do you have anytips on that aswell?

All I can really say is practice as much as you can. Find a good brand of pencils and work with the various tones they provide. Work on the amount of pressure you apply while drawing. The Graphic pencils I use are made by Derwent and come in 20 degrees.
Those from B to 9B are soft and easily provide smooth tones, these are best suited for shading. However be careful when using them, if you make a mistake you can leave smudges while erasing. Make sure you have a clean rubber or erasing putty, have a wide range and remove any graphite from their surface frequently. They also highlight finger prints very easily, the moisture from your fingers will bond the graphite to the paper, you wont be able to remove it completely. Make sure your fingers are dry and only hold the sides as little as you can, prop the paper on a stand so you also don’t have to rest your hand on it.
Those ranging from H to 9H are non-scratchy providing a lighter tone, they don’t require much pressure to be applied and are best suited for detailed drawings. Be careful though, the graphite is hard and if you apply too much pressure, you can leave marks on the paper, which will show up if you apply shading later.
You need some good quality paper too, avoid printer paper, only use it to sketch while practicing, I use Sea White of Brighton for final pieces.

Thank you! I've been trying to grasp onto the idea of the B and H penciles for shading. I'm in art and my teacher told me they were good for shading but lacked showing me a better way of using them. I could try and show you them if I ever get them back from him, they're not very good.

Should I start simple with practicing shading like shapes and such?

devouredex In reply to TwinkleeNosee [2010-12-09 07:45:33 +0000 UTC]

It is best to do whatever you feel comfortable with, but I would suggest that, yes. Personally I never really had any structure to my practicing, I just drew and worked things out as I went a long. But a lot of people do the shape studies first. Go to your nearest book store, they may have some material by artists with step by step guides.

Thank you! I've been trying to get someone who would take me seriously for ages. I figured shapes would be easier for shading and practice.

I think both are film making at its best and they both have seemingly countless strong points. I simply can't decide!!!
