Description Another full background drawing!

First of all, this drawing is not related to my fantasy setting. They may be cats, but this time they have nothing to deal with my fantasy feline race, they are just two regular anthro cheetahs. Thought I'd mention it in order to avoid confusion.

Anyways, this couple of cheetah hunters is trying to look for a prey, and they certainly look quite skilled at that. Their weapons and clothes are based on Central African ones, and I had a lot of fun searching for references.Β  The sword the male has is a weapon called shotel, a sickle sword, and the scabbard is made from an oryx horn (yes, they really did that).
For those who don't know, cheetahs with the fur pattern like the female's one are called "king cheetahs", and it happens because of a recessive mutation.

About the drawing, I'm not very satisfied with it. I messed up in a lot of areas, and the paper was not the best either, absorbing the colors in a crappy way. I also blame the lack of inspiration.
In any case, hope you like it! Any suggestion, comment and critique is most welcome!

Thank you! Β  No, it's traditional. I painted it with watercolor, and then slightly retouched it digitally since the scanner always messes up the colors.

You may not feel it's your best work, but this is still a nice piece! The poses are quite good, and the clothing/weapons as always are excellent. Also, I love the "king cheetah" pattern you've put on the female. Quite stunning!

In the interest of critique, this piece is pretty heavy on midtones and darks; there really aren't many highlights, which definitely affects the overall contrast of the piece, and I think may be part of what could be contributing to your dissatisfaction with it on the whole. While I don't know enough about working with watercolors (or your techniques) to suggest much about how to fix that, it seems logical to me that the paper was likely a major factor in how the colors ended up turning out.

Other watercolor artists that I keep tabs on seem to have some success with contrast by starting their pieces with a bunch of really light washes, and then slowly adding layers of increasingly saturated color from there. I don't know if you're familiar with Jenny Dolfen's work (she's on DA as Gold-Seven, though she doesn't post as much here anymore), but in the event you're not I'd recommend taking a peek at her work and her blog. Especially if you're a fan of Star Wars or Tolkien's literature. Even if you're not, she does an astounding job with her watercolors, and she occasionally shares info about her processes and techniques. I'm not sure if you'll find her experience helpful, but I figured I'd mention it anyways just in case!

Thank you a lot, I'm glad you like it anyways!

The lighting was intentional, even if it didn't turn out as well as I hoped.Β  I usually go for a much greater contrast between light and shadow, but I thought a softer light would better fit a "normal daylight situation".Β  The problem is how the coloring in general turned out, I messed up in putting down the colors and the paper was not of the best quality either (happens sometimes).

That is pretty much what I do as well, even if normally I use more concentrated colors.Β  I think they work better for a more "comic book-like" style. Β  And I know Jenny Dolfen's works, she's absolutely a god-tier artist! I have a LoooOOooong way before getting even remotely at her level, if I ever will!

haha, there's not a lot of difference! Here I've been more accurate in portraying a real animal, while usually I draw spots, ear and nose shapes and so on randomly. Also, this time they don't have retractable claws!
