Hurray for depressing subjects!
In this setting falling in love with someone of another race is quite dangerous, if it's also of the same gender it's very dangerous, and if said love interest is the daughter of a rich and powerful nobleman it's almost a death sentence.
The cat here still doesn't have a name, even if it doesn't matter much. She just wants to forget about the past experiences, and wine and drugs help, even if they cost money. I don't think I have to explain why she's on that bed with some coins near, or what her profession is...
Anyways! I'm very glad by how this drawing turned out, even if I felt bad all time while working on it. Still, I think that the fact many people are suffering like this (or worse even) is worth remembering.

Life's tough, and this piece shows it.
Reminds me of a scene that was kind of more popular in the 90's, with a young woman staring out of her apartment's window, with few lights and smoking her problems away.

I love this piece! even as depressing as it is...
Like everybody has been saying, this piece really tells a lot about the character, almost a whole story in fact. I think the lighting and the environment really support the depressing mood. Also in my opinion it is fairly easy to tell she is a female (I saw someone was not so sure because of the chest), but maybe that is up to person and how they view things, the shoulders and the hips as well as the chest look feminine enough to me at least.
The critique you got mentioned some perspective issues, which is agree on, but they are not distracting in my opinion.
Oh also, I must mention I think her expression if perfect for the situation, kinda sad looking but also very...how to put it, blank?... as in she is clearly trying not to think of the situation too much.. instead escaping the reality with the help of her hookah. :c This piece makes me feel bad for her :c please give her a happy ending with the one she loves!

Indeed, that is exactly what she is trying to do, trying to forget everything and being "free" with the help of the drugs.
Alas, I fear it will not be possible. When the rich nobles found out their daughter was having this "unnatural" relationship they ordered to beat the poor cat almost to death (hence the scars) and threw her out the city. It was a scandal, people talked, shame on the whole family and so on... the parents decided to send their daughter away in some convent, but she couldn't stand the whole situation and hung herself before the departure.
