Description
And this is basically why humans keep invading the Herimash lands but never even tried to wage war against the Sa'jiir.Herimash (cats) and Sa'jiir (lizards) are two of the non-human sentient species in my fantasy setting (Dwarves are the third one), in case you are not familiar with them. I made this mini-comic many months ago, but forgot about it until recently, and then completed it few days ago. Hope you like it!

Rather understandable. The differing species should band together.

haha indeed! I'm glad you like the look, the sword was something I made up at the moment, so I don't think it's historically accurate.

Hello:
Nuuu, poor kitties! ... they should really try to be allies with the Sa'jiir
.
But it is true and accurate how humans would indeed react.
The waraint in the Herimash people looks great .

Herimash warpaint looks so COOL!! Come to think of it, it's a pretty logical strategy: steal from the small, and use it to bribe the big into leaving you alone!!

My, what large hands that Sa'jiir has!
Heh. When I read the title, I thought that this was going to be another penis-measuring joke.
Haha! That's actually how the humans beat the Herimash and the Sa'jiir out of their lands. They go "Ok, guys, there's no use for unnecessary bloodshed. Let's do this, instead: on the count of three, we'll whip-out our braciole. Whoever's biggest gets the land. The smallest one has to leave."
The humans run-around in clothing and armor so the naked Herimash become cocky (oh dear, I've punned) at not even seeing the humans' junk (while the Herimash's stubby sheaths are at-least visible). Then there's the Sa'jiir who probably have cloacae. They probably turn-down the challenge and, instead just choose to fight.
The humans still get-back at the Sa'jiir, though. Even if they get beaten, they're not totally defeated 'cause they can just strut by the Sa'jiir, singing this song: www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpY3gg…

Indeed! XD Huge and full of claws.
HAHAHAHA Ok, that was absolutely hilarious, I loved the idea! XD The only flaw is that if Sa'jiir are like real reptiles they'd have two penises, everything goes in their favour

Brave Sir Robin ran away.
("No!")
Bravely ran away away.
("I didn't!")
When danger reared it's ugly head,
He bravely turned his tail and fled.
("I never!")
Yes, brave Sir Robin turned about
And gallantly he chickened out.
("You're lying!")
Swiftly taking to his feet,
He beat a very brave retreat.
Bravest of the brave, Sir Robin!

It does make sense. Unless the cats somehow spur their technology to compensate for other issues, albeit you would need to take into account things like available resources and workers, presence of high-level center of knowledge and power structures, and also pure interest in pursuing such things. Also logistics, organization and doctrine. For what I know of your setting the cats still have not many of those tings, much less all of them. I think they will need to wait for industrialization to truly have their moment in the sun.
Or I may be rambling nonsense. XD

Welp, unfortunately they lack everything you mentioned! They live in small scattered tribes, and most of the times they don't even have the technology to make steel weapons.

That's really sad for them. I assume that under those conditions it gets harder to impose themselves on their neighbors, or to prevent other from impose on them. Which brings me to next point: any attempt on their side to start adopting human tech and methods of economy and government? I can't see border regions do that successfully because of human pressure, but maybe realms further away from human lands could start seeing the painting on the wall? Unless they are too disperse and politically fragmented to do so, but even the north american indians forged alliances and actively attempted to create stronger political unions to respond to the European influence (of course, they were not really successful, for a variety of reasons).
Also, how do the lizards fall onto this? Are they more advanced than the humans, or are relying on their physical prowess and warrior spirit for now?
Oh my, so many questions.

0laffson In reply to S7alker117 [2017-03-07 17:00:01 +0000 UTC]
It's indeed very hard, if not impossible, for them to impose themselves.
About tech and economy it depends, all tribes who had at least a bit of contact with humans learned something to a degree, metallurgy first of all, while those who never had any contact are at stone-age level. Some tribes who don't live inside the forests are very advanced since they had more chances to trade and learn.
They are unfortunately VERY fragmented, they live in small nomadic tribes, and don't have any form of government (aside the chief, shaman and tribes' elders). They tried to form alliances, and even succeeded in some cases, but the problem is that the tribes remained isolated in small areas surrounded by human lands usually, so they don't have many chances to reach out for help. Being nomadic, they usually try to flee and move deeper into the forests, until there's basically no forest left.

Basically, they are the upstarts who still need to really find their way in the technological arena, huh? Although I do enjoy the idea of different reactions and developments accordingly with where they live and their specific culture. Not all cats will react the same way to the humans, some may run and hide, while others may try to stand their ground, military or, at least, economically. What I mean is that you are not making them monolithic. That's a neat detail.
I do see their difficulties, but I do think the appearance of a 'cat land' or some other cultural movement for the cats to find a place they can call their own and forge a new nation could be an interesting story development. Albeit middle ages could be too early for them to be able to do so successfully. Well, I'm probably rambling nonsense at this point, but your setting really fascinates me with how in-depth it is.

Indeed!
I'm glad you like the idea! There are quite a lot of different ethnicities, so they will react each in their own way, also because some have more of a warrior society than others.
Actually, Enorach and Lars might start working on creating something like that, in the future! Not just for cats, though.
Those two are good at obtaining favors from important people, it wouldn't be unlikely if they owned some land at some point.
