Description
And this is basically why humans keep invading the Herimash lands but never even tried to wage war against the Sa'jiir.Herimash (cats) and Sa'jiir (lizards) are two of the non-human sentient species in my fantasy setting (Dwarves are the third one), in case you are not familiar with them. I made this mini-comic many months ago, but forgot about it until recently, and then completed it few days ago.Β Hope you like it!

Maybe the Herimash and the Sa'jiir should get together, with the dwarves, and form an alliance.Β That should keep to pesky humans at bay.Β Can the Herimash throw their swords like whirling blades?Β Read about some African tribes that have nasty multi-blade knives that flung sideways like a Frisbee can take a man's legs off at fifty yards.

It won't be easy, a bit because the different races don't exactly like each other, and mainly because they live in very different and far away areas.
Indeed they can! Those weapons are called kpingas and cats use them, since I based them partially on central African tribes.

But when they have a common antagonist like the humans they settle their differences long enough to deal with what's at hand.Β Is it 'kpingas' or 'ktangas'?Β And the feline tribes shouldn't have any trouble with cutting humans down to size (no pun intended).

My money would still be on the humans because size matters. Reptiles donβt have the right biology to make them good soldiers and scaling (no pun intended) them up to that size would only exacerbate the problem.

They would actually be very good in my opinion, at least based on the superior arm range and strength. Still, size could also be a disadvantage for sure.

I'm sure the blade helps to. Having a big sword at your throat in addition to the claws around their necks make for a scary sight, but... not so much if their sword was bent up. The poor herimash need some better stuff.

indeed, that sure helps! Β The sword is not bent though, it's a sickle-sword, so it's curved like that by design. ^^

Well, I will be honest, the physically imposing lizards got a ton of advantages in this regard. Since firearms are probably not as wide spread, their larger and stronger bodies are quite good for any sort of land warfare. It does pay off, as it means they can defend their homeland easily. The Herimash meanwhile are unlucky, with humans completely underestimating the capability of claws, fangs, and a flexibility that could pretty much prove practical in combat.

0laffson In reply to AudeS [2017-02-28 09:20:39 +0000 UTC]
Firearms have yet to be invented, and the Sa'jiir are definitely the most dangerous fighters in the world. The fact that they live in the desert also helps them in keeping their independence, as no army would be able to fight them in their own territory.
The Herimash are weak in close combat, even if they don't have to be underestimated. When they fight in the woods they are almost unstoppable, as they use a lot of guerrilla tactics.

hahaha makes sense! XD
Jokes aside, in my setting they belong to a different species, even if still a human one, almost like Sapiens vs Neanderthal to make an example. They are still considered "non-humans", even if in term of discrimination they have it way easier than the "animals".
indeed!

AudeS In reply to Dukurow [2017-02-23 23:35:53 +0000 UTC]
Well, I guess that might be due to their origin in Norse mythology. Dwarves and Elves were seen as human-like, but not human, similar to the Aesir and Wanir (which are the gods). Tolkien based alot of his work on Norse mythology, and thus the races Elves and Dwarves as we know them today were implemented as fantasy standards. The main difference of course in Mythology is their respective worlds (Elves and Dwarves had their own planes), attributes, etc. This later also swaps into fantasy, where elves and dwarves are highly powerful, live ridiculously long for mammals, and have certain physical attributes.
Of course, on a practical level dwarves are just smaller and stockier than humans, and elves got pointy ears. Frankly, that does make beastmen stand out much more, should they be there.

I really should have thought more about Tolkien's influences. Wasn't Smaug based on Fafnir, after all?
Thanks, this clears a lot up!

AudeS In reply to Dukurow [2017-02-24 08:52:58 +0000 UTC]
Uh, so much was based on that story. The One Ring for example, is based on the ring Andvarinaut, whom Loki steals to pay up for killing the dwarf Hreidmar's son Otr, who transformed into an otter, whose pelt the trickster wanted. Well, next to that Hreidmar also had two other sons, Reginn and Fafnir, and the latter got cursed by that ring and murdered his father to get all the gold. Over time he would transform into a wyrm. So, yeah, Smaug is also based on that. A large part of every story in Middle Earth is, pretty much.
And no problem, I have a lot of interest in these things.
