If you were wondering why I didn't draw much in the past days, not even sketches, this is the reason! Making this map took me AGES, especially having to come up with all the names (and always hoping I wasn't insulting someone in a foreign language).
Anyways! This is the map of my world in the year 1365, before the war between Mirovia and Laatven (plus all the allied countries) started and messed up all the borders.
In case you are wondering Lars was born in the city of Eisgart, in Laatven, and Enorach was born near the city of Adra in southern Evoria. (I really hope to draw or write their story one day, and not just a short comic).

I'll write a bit of things about the main countries for those interested.
__________________________________________

Anshar and Kishar are the two continents on the map. Kishar is the one below the Endless Forest

Laatven: Also called Empire of the Holy Flame, is one of the most powerful empires of the known world. The emperor wields both secular and religious powers, and he's the head of the Church of the Holy Flame, even if tensions with the clergy are the norm. The cult of the Holy Fire is widespread also in many other countries, and that gives the Empire a big advantage.
Laatven is always trying to expand its borders, especially since its position is far from the main trade routes. Notable examples are the "Northern Wars" where Laatven gained control of Neunstadt and Arsthal on the Nothern Sea, the invasion of Evoria and the islands in the south, and the continuous wars with Mirovia for the control of the inner sea, that always failed.

Evoria: Evoria was one of the major kingdoms in Anshar, and even expanded itself on Northern Kishar. It was one of the wealthiest kingdoms thanks to the sea trade, and that was the main cause of the invasion by the empire of Laatven. The war lasted for years, and despite ending with the defeat of Evoria, the kingdom still managed to maintain a certain degree of autonomy.

Mirovia: A small but rich kingdom on the coast of the inner sea, Mirovia has currently the most organized army in the world, which helped them standing their ground against Laatven during many wars. The "Neutral lands" and "No man's land" between the Laatvenian and Mirovian borders were established after the last war to keep a truce.
Mirovia is allied with Astrad and Aquilia.

Tresti: It may seem almost insignificant, but Tresti is one of the richest and most powerful countries in the known world. It's navy is the best in the world, and the republic holds all the islands of the inner sea, and many territories south of Elaris as well. It controls almost all the sea trade, and not ever Laatven ever tried to wage war against it.

Elaris: Another great empire, which is however very stable and tries to stay out of wars. It's extremely rich due to the trade with Tresti (despite some tensions) and that brought great advancements in term of arts and culture.
Arediç, Vrúvije and Smirije are almost vassal kingdoms.

Sendhar: The third great empire, and also the newest one. The area was first ruled by several independent kingdoms, until the Sendharian Sultanate expanded from the west and conquered all of them.  Since then, Sendhar expanded quickly in every direction, and is currently fighting to gain control of the northern coast, where the main trade routes are. The kingdoms of Aveira and Aresia, the last remains of Evoria's colonization of Kishar, are slowly losing ground.

Dovje: The main kingdom in the north, founded by the descendants of the nomadic tribes from the western steppes. Not much else to say, except that Dovje is the commercial center of all north-western Anshar.

This is still an "early version" but I hope you still liked it! ^^ Maybe I'll add rivers and the name of the seas later on.
If some names sound really weird or are an insult to someone's mom without me knowing, just tell me.

I do understand how time consuming making a world can be, I'm also trying to make my own but finding time in-between college and will do put hands to work is a huge hassle. The biggest struggle however, has been making names up. X'D Either way, I really like how you made your world and would really love to know more of it if you're willing to share. ^w^

Cool! It's clear that you put a lot of thought into your world. I think it would be right to assume that tribal catfolk and lizardfolk have no countries of their own and instead inhabit territories such as the Endless Forest and Desert of Kher Abdhar instead? Also, do dwarves have their own territories or live exclusively among humans?

0laffson In reply to AstarGoldenwing [2017-04-10 14:22:57 +0000 UTC]

Thank you a bunch!
Right, they don't have their own kingdoms, and either live outside the borders or they still live in small independent populations withing the kingdoms. For example in southern Mirovia and Tresti there are many tribes of "wild" cats living in the forests there.

Dwarves used to have their own kingdoms, but they were conquered by humans a few centuries before. ^^ Now they live only among humans.

neat ... great colours and really realistic flow of the Mountains and Coastal lines.
... also one of those maps where no rivers split, or flow out of oceans into others. ( You dont wanna know how often i saw this lately^^)

anyway, great Job

Hello Olaffson ! This map is incredible, waw. The details and the style are quite fantastic, and I like the fact that it is very believable : it could be the map of one of our world regions, with this closed sea and the mountains that are organized in chains... This is very cool, and the drawing is extremely cool - damn, even the typo is nice.

I juste have one question, as a big geography nerd : what is your scale ? What are the distances on this map ? I guess I would like how long would be a trip from Adawa to Kaard...

Thank you so much! I'm really happy you liked it, it means a lot!

I have yet to decide for sure, but I'd say it would be around 4500 - 5000 kilometers! Almost like getting from Denmark to Chad, in Africa.

Nope, I saw only the old one! ^^ And you did ask, but I didn't see the comment, I had to double check. It's starting to be hard keeping track of replies haha.   You certainly improved, and I always like the attention to detail.
However, if you want to hear my suggestion, I'd recommend to practice a lot with anatomy, since I see several issues there.  Remember you should always have a "naked body" base before attempting to draw clothes, and it must be pretty precise in order to work!

Jon-McBride1 In reply to 0laffson [2017-04-01 19:19:38 +0000 UTC]

By the way, just so I'm 100% clear, which issues do you see specifically, like, mostly the torso, breasts, legs, overall height?  I'm asking because I feel like I know where I struggle at, but for the most part, I think I have improved, like you said, with overall anatomy and such.  Again, I appreciate the guidance.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

0laffson In reply to Jon-McBride1 [2017-04-02 18:57:56 +0000 UTC]

I'd say the main issue is arms and legs. They are too thick and sometimes too short, and the articulations look sometimes weird. You also have some perspective issues, like the feet on the drawing of the Anubian Assassin.

If I were you, I'd start drawing a lot of sketchy figures, without even finishing them ( 40.media.tumblr.com/93dfa6d134… like these) and using references to see how the different body parts behave.  It should really help you, making the drawing way easier, and after that you'll see that drawing clothes over the sketches will be extremely easy.

Sorry if I sound too harsh by the way, it's far from my intention! Practice is the key, together with using references! ^^

Jon-McBride1 In reply to 0laffson [2017-04-03 03:04:13 +0000 UTC]

No, you're fine, I saw the issue right after I sent the message pretty much, my bad.  Again, I do appreciate the guidance, I do have some references on my Pinterest actually, so I'll just use some that I have there.  Again, not sure if you got my message on your new piece, just curious as to why you don't do face veils in any of the pieces.  Again, thank you ^^.

Oho! Maps, absolutely love looking at maps! Cartography is so much fun. Was the shape of the continent inspired by the Far East?

Also, where is Larz from?

Thank you a lot!   Not really, it was inspired by many places all mixed together, from islands in Indonesia, to parts of the Mediterranean and Europe, etc. , and in the end it turned out like this. ^^

Eisgart, south-western Laatven.

I'm not sure if anyone has pointed it out yet but the desert of rher should stay in the country borders. Also the text under adawa needs to either be in the water or on land because it is hard to read and doesn't look good. Overall it looks great but I think it needs a once over for the type. Sorry I'm a graphic designer in school so we have to be harsh with critique

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

0laffson In reply to DakotaSKI [2017-03-31 13:26:53 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I agree 100% with the text under Adawa, I'll have to move it! About the desert, I prefer to keep the text outside since it's mainly outside of the borders, and works as a natural barrier. Not sure what you mean exactly by " it needs a once over for the type", sometimes I have problems with English, sorry.
Still, critiques are always welcome, thank you! ^^

DakotaSKI In reply to 0laffson [2017-03-31 21:07:18 +0000 UTC]

oh sorry i meant that the words for the desert should stay in the border of the country. and a "once over" just means looking at each text to see if it has any issues or is crossing a line weird. as an example the Raard, is that the sea or land. since it touches both its hard to tell. just little stuff like that.

AudeS [2017-03-28 09:12:45 +0000 UTC]

I can actually say that when it comes to building up a world, a map is always nice. I have to keep a mental image in my head, because frankly I can't draw so well, but anyway, I like the style you picked for it. Definitely good for a work of fantasy on a fictional world, and the spread of land and ocean seems natural to me, with having non-liniear forms. The coloration also is nice, as it indicates for the most part a north with a lot of meadows, and a large desert in the south.

Now, Laatven is probably a scary thing, as you have an emperor who is also the pope, so to speak. That is perhaps not quite out of historic examples, as the Tennoh of Japan actually fills the role as emperor and high priest, same with other cultures, so it actually can be compared. Only, in this case it is probably worse as they are a religious center with world-wide reach, giving them a lot of influence. Of course, there is a lot more countries, giving it a very natural feel of how states were spread in the comparable time period of our world's Europe. I also like the mixed etymology with Laatven, Astrad, and Mirovia for example using German-styled city names, while Kaard and Krava are Scandinavian, and Dovje Slavic. And I am just picking examples here, the build and development of this world is rather complex, and I like that sort of complexity.

0laffson In reply to AudeS [2017-03-31 14:32:18 +0000 UTC]

It really is, it's also helpful in planning a story and stay consistent!   Even a rough sketch on a notebook can help.

It is! The Tennoh is a good real-life example, but I believe that if the Papal State managed to somehow expand itself during the Renaissance, it would have become exactly like Laatven, some kind of theocratic empire, so that was my main inspiration.
I'm really happy you liked that detail! It was the hardest thing to do, but it gives me the chance to take inspiration from different cultures, aside the fact it gives more variety to the setting.

Thank you so much for writing this comment, really!
