Description
At last! I've been reading High Rhulain again and had an urge to draw these two heroic otters: Lady Tiria Wildlough the High Queen Rhulain and Leatho Shellhound the infamous otter outlaw. I just love these two and sketching this was pretty dang fun. There are those who have not read the book High Rhulain (by Brian Jacques). Therefore I will not spoil anything.
I haven't drawn otters before so I researched otter anatomy and studied David Elliot's illustrations in the book. Other than that I noticed that my sketches have been getting better. I really loved how this turned out. Who knows? Maybe I'll do some illustrating someday.
There you have it!

AWESOME job! I always saw a Tiria+Leatho pairing in my head when I read the book.

I love it! It's such a good picture of their characters. I love Leatho's face! It's hilarious! And I love how his paw is on her shoulder.
I know that he was way older and all... but I still think that they got together in the end. Anyways, I love it!

Thanks! And yeah, despite their age difference, there's some potential in that pairing.

Wow, this is amazing! Great picture!
I really like the way you draw otters, very realistic. The foreground is very neat too, wish I could draw rocks that well. You're sketches are truely wonderful, could you possibly post more?

I researched otter anatomy if that helps. That and David Elliot's otter illustrations. Afterward I got a pretty good idea of how I should draw them.

Nice. I tried studying river otters, the result looked like a sea otter. D:

Wow! Awesome! You should be BJ's illustrator!
And I agree with FelldohTheSquirrel, I like your sketches better than your digital art (not that your digital art isn't fantastic, btw).
Those two were awesome, and they would've made an awesome couple, had they more time to interact. But oh well.
Heh, interesting to note, Tiria is the only "young heroine/warriormaid" who offs the main villian (Mariel never got Gabool, Dotti didn't defeat Ungatt Trunn, Grath never even came face-to-face with Ublaz, and Triss wasn't the one who killed Kurda in the end).
Of course, Cregga did kill a main baddie, except I wouldn't count her as a "young heroine/warriormaid" because she's a badger, and badgers are already mighty creatures of war. Plus I recall she was no longer young when she killed Damug.

Thank you, mate. You have absolutely no idea how bad I want to be illustrating for Brian Jacques.
I too was thinking that Leatho and Tiria would have made a good pairing. But hey, that's what fan fiction is for, eh? And fan art. That just gave me an idea.
I didn't even notice the young-heroine/warriormaid-not-being the-one-to-slay-the-main-villain thing you mentioned. That's pretty unfair if you ask me. Out of all of them I believe Grath Longfletch had the most right to slay Ublaz herself. I mean he was to blame for the fact that she was the last of Holt Lutra. Mariel comes in next.

Well, I can guess that you want to illustrate for him very much.
Yep, that's what fanfiction and fanart are for.
I suppose so, except the swordfight between Martin and Ublaz was so awesomely epic, plus I figure the way how Grath would kill him would be to shoot him, and Ublaz deserves a more ceremonial death - such as stepping on the coral watersnake, which was the symbol of his power.
As for Mariel, Gabool also had Rawnblade and Joseph on his tail, along with all the other creatures he had wronged, so it kinda works out that he was killed by that big scorpian.

I guess that's true. I need to read those books again. I forgot how each died.

Yeah, I was like that for awhile; I'd read the book once and that'd be it. But thankfully I started writing certain fanfics and joined the Redwall Season 4 Project, and those more or less forced me to reread the books, and remember how amazing they are.

I see what you mean. I just read High Rhulain the second time and am now reading Salamandastron which would lead me to sketch Ferahgo and Klitch. But you really can't read those books once and be done with it, can you?

Yeah, it could be fun. But I still prefer traditional art. I'm just an old-school type of guy.
