Description being made in Cinema 4D R11 AR3 . this model is based on the Arc Generator in the recent Iron Man movies and it's likeness is Copyrighted to Marvel Studios [link] . the metal textures on the chest plates (Step 3 and after) are from images by ~wojtar-stock

to do :
- make each material more realistic
- finish molding armor
- inset bolts into armor

done :
- flatten rings
- reshape center ring
- reshape center ring arms
- remake the wires between the blocks
- add solder blobs on the copper block wires
- turn each screw slightly different
- make a new material for the screws
- add plastic ring through the copper blocks

the final render will be 1920 x 1080

i would really like to hear any opinions you have . i want to spend the time to make this model and render look amazing

good points . thanks the copper wires are only half drawn and symmetry'd . then that is in an array . the repetition of patterns was overly apparent when i bumped that mat . i'll try increasing the height and inner width of the specular , maybe change the specular color to be a dark yellow / bronze

for the final render i'm considering zooming out a little and making layered chest plate lines with inset cuts and flush bolts . most of the current mat details and problems won't be noticeable

i fixed everything i listed in the description except the mats work . i also made the center much deeper and added 2 lights going into it . still waiting on a preview render of that

Believe me - I very seldom make an object that can hold up to this kind of scrutiny!

BTW have you tried using caustics on anything yet? If this is reflective enough, it might look good with caustics - of course the render time will go through the roof

i don't think caustics would do much for me in this case because only one of the center blue lights is actually giving off light . the rest aren't casting light or shadows . also as you mentioned i can't afford to increase render time . this one crop of a render lasted over 5 hours before i stopped it to fix the problems . if i were to render it with this camera it would take 16+ hours . by zooming out a little i'm hopefully going to make that a lot less - but that depends on the details of the chest plates and their materials / shadows / and all of that jazz .. badaba debeda baaa !

AIIIEEEEE whu... 5 hours?!!! That's not at all ideal...
Questions:
Reflections? If so, can you reduce the number of ray recursions (?)
Global illumination: does C4D have "Final Gather"? (Final Gather is an approximation of true global illumination, but based on screen/pixel space. It pre-calculates a radiosity "map" and renders much faster.)
It seems like you could speed up that render a lot if you are able to optimize the settings. Global illumination uses a horrendous number of samples, but some renderers can "interpolate" (i.e. average the values) between samples more widely spaced.

Just some thoughts - based on my own experiences using some other rendering systems.

thanks so much for all of the insights . my computer is only a 2Ghz with 2G ram . i hadn't rebooted in over 16 days so i did that and it's running a little faster now . i have reduced the reflections a lot . my light settings are the biggest thing killing this render . i'm using Wavy Turbulence Noise and the mice in my computer hate that . a lot . plus it's duplicated in an array ten times . but i really like those light effects the way they are so i'll willingly suffer the added payment of time . i'm not even using any render settings besides Antialiasing . no GI/Ambient Occlusion/Caustics/Color Correction or Color Mapping . i could run a render without the lights then another with only the lights and photoshop that together but i'd rather do everything in C4D . that's a hubris thing . GI in C4D will save cached results . the only problem with that is if you move the camera you'll have strange shadows until you clear the map . that drove me crazy the first time

I had an image of mice with "brain helmets" chained to their oars like galley slaves in "Ben Hur"

I think my computer (the one at home, it's an old one) is powered by a small weasel with godawful bad allergies

it's the same bronze mat i gave you except i added a fresnel to the reflection and changed the spectrum to copper colors . a little tweaking and you'll have that materials too
